After having a number of false starts and a couple of mutts described as pedigrees, I am still trying to locate a suitable estate.

I’ve come across an 2018 Audi A4 Avant 45, and was just wondering if anyone has experience of owning one, anything to keep an eye out for, any issues etc.

Budget is around £20k and does need to be petrol for mileage reasons

I had a 2017 2.0 tfsi for around five years. It never put a foot wrong and was very economical. The only expenditure apart from servicing was a brake warning sensor, and a new release mechanism for the fuel cap, both cheap repairs done by a specialist mechanic

3 years ago my son bought from Audi a 5 year old 2.0 TDI 190 S Line Saloon. I thought it was absolutely brilliant and considered buying it myself as a third car (in the end I bought a Jaguar XF).

I owned back in the day an original A4, and my wife the third generation, and although they were very well put together, the drive was somewhat disappointing.

I think you’ll find the Audi a loyal and classy companion for many years.

I would check out the difference in ride comfort between the s-line which comes as standard with sports suspension and sport/SE with standard suspension. If you drive them back to back, the ride comfort of the Sport/SE is significant.

I appreciate for your mileage you need to go petrol however the might be worth testing the diesel to see whether you prefer the way it drives.

I would only buy with full service history.

I agree with the point about ride comfort, to add to my post above, I deliberately sought out the Sport model for he better ride, although most for sale were the S Line. I avoided the diesel because, although I like the characteristics of a diesel engine, I believe petrol cars are more reliable and give less trouble. They are also extremely refined.

The S Line could be optioned with Sport suspension so worth checking which the S Line models have.

My wife has the facelift B9.5 Avant 45 in S-Line trim. She enjoys it because it does commuting and family stuff well (we have two young kids) with a decent turn of pace when required but I find it slightly boring to drive. As others have mentioned beware the 19" alloys and S-line suspension which does give quite a firm ride.....I've recently changed to 17" wheels with chunky sidewall tyres for winter which makes it much more comfortable. Nothing has gone wrong for us except routine servicing in 2 years of ownership, the DSG box is due a service at 40k miles if I remember correctly.

Incredibly complicated under the bonnet, great to travel in, a bit dull and heavy for town work. Very long legged, long distance car.
