After finishing The Soprano's for the 20th time, I still had a mafia itch so I gave Gomorrah a go
I've just started season 3 so no spoilers please.
Wow wow wow, what a show!
Just some observations
They have the worst car selection, I keep forgetting the first season is modern day 2014, These so called millionaire drug dealers getting driven around in early Touraegs
In season 2, one of the bosses, Scaniel gets 1 million euros however she is chauffered around in a GLA 200, sitting in the back all cramped
Could it be because of the presence of the real gang members in the area and potential theft or is it because the person in charge of the cars hasnt got a clue

Im sure with the cars you need to be inconspicuous in Naples, both from rival gangs and Carabinieri!
I loved the first few series, fly on the wall stuff, the sounds and filming were brilliant and the theme tune is awesome.
It does get a bit fantasy land midway through, but you'll definitely have some more twists to keep you going and don't forget to watch the spin off films as well shot in between the seasons.
Sopranos was good but Gomorrah feels more realistic.
BTW Saviano books are completely hard work stick to the TV show!

No hierarchy as such its all regionalised and territory based, you then have in Naples region multiple groups all vying for top dog spot. The Surburba one mentioned I found too similar to Gomorrah.

Camorra are basically the Neapolitan mafia. La cosa nostra isn't an exclusive group, it's just a catch all for the mafia in general (translates as 'our thing' or 'this thing of ours').I don't think modern mafia in Italy like this is as 'Godfather' in as much as defined made men etc
Got fed up of Gomorrah quite quickly and never bothered finishing it, but didn’t know why I felt that way. Looking back on it I think it was relentlessly gritty and bleak in a way which ultimately makes it too unrealistic. That and there is no reason to care about any of the characters.
Think about the greatest shows of all time, many of them also centred around crime and gangs with serious or disturbing elements. Difference is, all of them: Breaking Bad, the Wire, Game of Thrones (most of it anyway), the Sopranos etc have comedic moments and characters cracking jokes. Because in real life that is actually what happens. Just because you’re a career criminal doesn’t mean you have to be miserable the entire time.

Difference is, all of them: Breaking Bad, the Wire, Game of Thrones (most of it anyway), the Sopranos etc have comedic moments and characters cracking jokes. I do agree it looks depressing, perhaps its a filter they used. Even the fancy homes of the bosses looked super depressing and the beach scenes look awful like its blackpool, the show does give me 90's midlands vibes sometimes when in reality its set in Naples.Think about the greatest shows of all time, many of them also centred around crime and gangs with serious or disturbing elements. Just another crime drama with 'New ally of the season who comes out of nowhere who gets betrayed' and 'New enemy of the season who gets kiilled by the last episode' for the main guy to deal with.
The first two seasons feel very gritty and authentic though.

I think each season was strong and I liked that it didn't glamorise the life. It was intentionally gritty, dark, violent and depressing and all the better for it. The first two seasons were the best, but I loved Blueblood character arc and storylines in later seasons.
My only real issue with the show was the Ciro coming back from the dead story which was a stretch too far. It was a massive shock when he was killed on the boat. Both unexpected and powerful. The shock of what happened added to the brilliance of the show for me. The subsequent spin off film and then his reintroduction felt like a bit of a cop out. It was like the writers realised he was one of the most loved characters so instead of going with the more realistic version where he is killed (and had no chance of surviving), they wrote him back in. Other than that, I loved it.
