I know it's a weird title but I couldn't think of a decent one off the top of my head hehe I read a Roger Ebert review on The Gumball Rally from 1976 where it was dismissed (along with Cannonball/Carquake) as being a "...here today, forgotten tomorrow..." film (to paraphrase) and had quite a few duff reviews ( https://www.metacritic.com/movie/the-gumball-rally... ). I've watched it numerous times, and, offhand, I can't think of another car film that provides the same, let alone better, soundtrack and vicarious action.

Personally, it is probably my favourite car film also and (probably) responsible for my all-time dream car (or at least one of them!)

Is there another car-centric film which provides the same level of repeatable, daft fun?

Fast and Furious Tokyo Drift for me. So cheesy and daft but I love it. The setting obviously helps.

Or how the protagonist is supposed to be in college, but looks like he's in his mid 30's

I still love the Cannonball Run. I hate that they used sped-up film for some scenes but I love most of the actors and the daftness of the story. And that title sequence with the music and the Lambo and the girls.

Vanishing Point is still a good watch... nihilistic, cynical, a pointless "shouting at the clouds" kind of film.

The Gumball Rally is still the best though.

The Herbie films, Grand Prix, Two Lane Blacktop, Genevieve, Christine. Hard to think of a really good one though.

Probably better ones involving motorcycles: World’s Fastest Indian, Easy Rider, The Wild One, Electraglide In Blue….

Absolutely agree with The Gumball Rally, Cannonball Run & Vanishing Point.

I’d like to add Smokey & the Bandit and Convoy.

Essentially minimal plot joining car chase scenes together with an anti-establishment and personal freedom narrative.

I love all of then just as much now as then.

Mad max fury road?

Big car chase across the desert to find something, turns out it’s not there, big car chase back to where they started. Pointless but brilliant brain out fun with some epic custom vehicles and loads of action.

I saw it at the cinema when I was in a bit of a depression and it was just what I needed and better than it had any right to be so I’ll always have a soft spot for it.

Maximum Overdrive for some properly cheesy 80s fun.

An obvious one I suppose, but The Fast and the Furious, the original one.

Completely daft plot, ludicrous over the top action, laughably unrealistic details (18 consecutive upshifts, rivets popping out of bodywork, DANGER TO MANIFOLD etc etc), basically a 90s Max Power reader's fever dream.

Nonetheless a massively entertaining film, and of course hugely successful with a seemingly infinite number of sequels.

'Le Mans', the Steve McQueen film about everyone's favourite 24 hour race.

Excellent visuals, but a dreadful as an actual film.

Duel is a classic , but it full of crapness. Car with man who mutters to himself for one and half hours gets hunted by a truck.

No mans land. Charlie sheen in Porsches in a film whose plot was stolen for fast and furious.

It's a good watch

I've said it before, I absolutely hate musicals, but love The Blues Brothers, I'm one of these sad individuals who can quote you the script word for word, I've seen it so many times.
Best car chase film of all time.
