Been lurking a bit recently , but appreciate some advice

I bought an approved 4 year old BMW (430D) from a dealer in June , dealer A . 12 months bmw warranty as standard .

Wanted the best of the outgoing model for a 6cyl RWD , whilst you can still get them. Also wanted a manufacturer approved warranty so I can take it to any dealer . Dealer A is 90 mins away .

Had 5 months , no issues , done 4K miles , car was well prepped.

On Friday going down motorway , error came up on screen “Oil above maximum , you can carry on but go to service centre”.

I haven’t topped up oil at all , I’m guessing DPF issues . Running oil level check on Idrive confirms it and error keeps popping up .

Called local BMW dealer (dealer B) , they can’t look at car until Jan 2025 , they are quite a big dealer as well . I didn’t but I from here .

I don’t really want to drive the car and cause issues, but I now can’t drive it for a month.

I don’t really have access to another car and have a disabled (registered blue badge) son that I use the car to take him to school and medical appointments , so I need a car , hence spending near 30k on a reliable one .

Is it worth complaining to the original BMW dealer that sold me the car to see if that can get me in sooner ? Or Bmw main contact centre ?

Trying to work out the best pathway to get it looked at , I don’t mind waiting a little but a month is a bit much

Any advice appreciated.

Don't complain as they aren't yet aware of an issue that they haven't been made aware of and Dealer B is not their issue. Also you chose to buy from 90 miles away, not them.

I would start with a polite call to the service manager and explain the situation, with a positive "How can you help me with this problem?" before considering escalation to BMW UK if they can't help.

That said, dealers in December are also challenged with fewer working days and workshop staff rightly wanting holidays, plus seasonal illnesses, so they will have reduced capacity in Dec.

Yeah agree , I shouldn’t have used the word complain , escalate is better .

Agree on buying cars further away is my issue . Hence I made sure there are several dealers local .

Thinking it through and as above I recon speaking to the service dept of the initial selling dealer is my best option to focus on .

I would speak with the local service team and ask them what, if any, damage it will cause if you continue to drive until they can get it in. That way you can decide what you might to do next.

First thing any garage will try is taking some oil out and reset the warning. It’s odd for oil light to come so far after last top up. I had same issue but soon after service when parked at a particular location. It turned out it’s was on a slight slope.

Anyway, I’d take it to any garage available to do the oil removal and reset the warning.

Assuming its the same set up as a new car warranty - I was told to call out BMW assist for everything . The dealer has to fix within a set time or they have to pay for the cost of the hire car.

If you use the BMW breakdown cover and they recover it to the dealer will they put you in a rental car til yours is fixed? Volvo did this for me with the warranty provided when the car was serviced by them. Mine was an alternator fail.

Not much point in doing that, no way will they advise anything other than to not drive it.

An increase in oil level can only be either fuel or coolant entering the system, neither of which is going to do the engine much good.

Most likely it`s diesel from failed regens or leaking injectors, if so a short term fix to continue using it would probably be an oil & filter change but doing that might invalidate the warranty.

Maybe just park it at the selling dealer and hire something until it`s fixed.

Having been in a very similar position, I would suggest calling BMW assist and tell them it’s broken down, you can’t drive it as you don’t want to further the damage and potentially void the warranty.

They will collect and have someone look at it sooner than Jan (the service advisor at the dealer told us to do this..)

If it’s anything like BMW Salisbury you will need to call every day chasing for a courtesy car, in the end we had a new 3 series touring for a month.

This 100%.

Call out BMW assist, it will get priority in the dealers and they should keep you mobile with a hire/ courtesy car.

Gave bmw assist a call , getting the car picked up today

Hopefully a courtesy car as well

As others have said, oil level will probably have risen due to failed regens and diesel getting into the oil. It happens a lot with Land Rovers.

The solution will just be more regular oil changes.

Alas young Bean I wanted a petrol , but I couldn’t find a decent 440 in the dealer network and having driven the 420 I wanted 6 cyls . Tbh electric would have been a far better option but I wanted a 6cyl rwd car before they go out of production.

To give some closure -

Phoned up BMW assist , within an hour car was picked up from my house on a tow truck (Sunday)

2 mins after tow truck had gone , Enterprise phoned me and had a similar spec brand new 3 series ready for me at a local branch which I picked up as a courtesy car.

Local Bmw dealer (which was booked till Jan) worked on car yesterday fixing in it , keeping me updated .

Apparently it is a known software issue , with a dedicated bulletin fix - change oil and reset sensor . Apparently oil was Ok but sensor has issues and there is no manual dipstick .

Picked up car yesterday , fully valeted , oil changed, was even able to leave the hire car at the BMW dealer and no upsell on anything !!!

Pretty amazing service tbh , sold me the idea of continuing the extended warranty in June .

Had 25 years of buying cars and usually expect the worst when they go wrong within 6 months .

WOW, great to hear something good about customer service in the motor trade.

I reckon you have just increased the 2nd hand BMW market by several £1M. You should ask for some commission!!!
(Of course, on the other hand, you might have just decreased BMW profits by several £1M as everyone is now phoning BMW assist!!!)

Fair, but someone else probably got bumped back?

Unless workshop holds x% of time free each day to deal with breakdowns?
