As we all know the UK is getting far too expensive and with further increases incoming consumers are holding back. I thought this thread would be useful to help each other through the financial bad times.

My tip. If you work 5 days a week in an office bring your own lunch. I purchase a loaf of bread and some double gloucester cheese for £6. This does me a week. My colleagues spend £6 per day on lunch. So £30 a week. £120 a month. I save £96 a month through doing what I do which covers travel costs.

Please share your tips. Can be for anything as it saves money.

I can beat that I reckon.

Don't buy a Ferrari. If you buy a Fiesta the savings are far more than making sandwiches!

hehe

Lunches are one of my pet hates.

I'm sure you can mix it up a bit on the DIY front but the point is that I'm guessing most people don't eat a six quid lunch if they're at home so why do it at work?

Don't smoke and don't drink alcohol.

Will probably pay your mortgage for the month and the benefit of you living longer.

Oh and don't get divorced twice.

I'm tight and too lazy to make sandwiches, so at the moment I'm having a tin of soup heated in the microwave at work with some bread for two or three days in the week.

Lots of flavour variety with soup and gets some vegetables in the diet. I hate cooking vegetables.

I used to do the soup thing and then realised a coffee would also do what I need - and it’s free at work. I do that a couple of times a week

Because they don't pay someone else to make it for them at home?

I can put up with them especially if it also frees up the time I'd spend going out to buy lunch.

24 hour fasts 3 times a week. Think how much you save by just not eating. And you lose weight so you don't wear your chairs or shoes out so quickly.

Also, switch your thermostat down to 10C. You won't die. Just use a hot water bottle to keep you warm.

And when you do eat, eat instant noodles with frozen veg and beans thrown in. Or tins of soup with frozen veg and beans thrown in.

And don't buy old sports or supercars.

I suppose this is kind of reverse savings as it’s still coming from one of your accounts but I have round ups on my current account that tallys up to the nearest pound into a savings account from all purchases you can also set it to double up…

Back in the day I used to use cash draw out £100 and that had to last me the week for spends easier to budget when it’s in your pocket and you can see it going. This was the 1990’s.

TooGoodToGo can be ok. I once got over 20 pre-packaged sandwiches, they just emptied the fridge and gave me everything that was going out of date.

McDonald's coffee is pretty reasonable, even Greggs Latte's are less than half the price of Costa's version and almost as good.

If you do a significant mileage commuting and your salary is mid 60's and you have kids and you can charge at home then a cheaper SS EV will almost certainly pay for itself.

I did the same calculation 20 odd years ago. £1000 on sandwiches a year. Bloody hell, how much? Right, I'm making my own from now on.

A week that idea lasted.

It's making a comeback with some people.

Anecdotal but not necessarily salary related but sometimes that and sometimes people unable to control or keep track of spending on cards/contactless.

Not only do you save on bog roll, you also get the company to pay for your time whist having a dump.

I had the same realisation on a similar timeframe, but I stuck with it. I still make my own lunch at least half the times I go into the office.

The other thing is the cheaper lunch options seem pretty awful compared to even a basic thing I make myself, and getting something decent quality in the city really costs.

Keep your hands warm by having a bag of dog st in each pocket. And I don't even have a dog.
