Several of my best / most expensive sweaters have been damaged in my wardrobes, presumably by moths. I thought this was a thing of the distant past…

I want to kill them, not deter them. What do I need?

First, you need to kill the existing moths and larvae. Several solutions:
1) Heat Treatment: Wash infested clothes at a high temperature (at least 50°C) or dry clean them. For delicate fabrics, freezing them for 72 hours can also kill eggs and larvae.
2) Vacuum Thoroughly: Clean wardrobes, drawers, and carpets where larvae might hide. Pay special attention to crevices.
3) Moth Killer Products: Use insecticide sprays specifically designed to kill clothes moths and their larvae. Products containing Permethrin or Cypermethrin are effective.

Then you need to set traps for adults. Use pheromone traps to catch and kill male moths. This disrupts their breeding cycle.

Once you have got rid of the moths you need to get some Cedar wood in the closets to discourage future moths.
They dont like it at all.

Mothballs, if they still exist. They contained naphthalene.

Ah right, that was banned in 2008 - like most things that worked.

Maybe these are illegal ones: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Original-Fashioned-Protec...

Chinese ones are likely to be camphor not naphthalene, still work in a similar way and you wouldn't want you/pets/children eating them either.

Apparently camphor is a deterrent, it doesn't kill moths.

Do children and pets like the taste of camphor? It seems unlikely.

Go on Amazon and stock up on various types of moth products.

Pheromone traps which attract and catch the males on a glue board will generally reveal where they are.

You can buy moth balls but they tend to work in enclosed spaces e.g. wardrobes and drawers.

Look around edges of carpets especially under heavy furniture items which aren't moved often, behind doors, look for tell-tale white casings which they shed.

If they are in your carpets buy moth insecticide and start spraying in areas where you are finding them.

They are a nightmare, if you have an infestation you need to get on top of it very quickly or they will inflict total damage on clothes and woollen carpets.

My tailor on Savile Row recommends this: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Rentokil-PS127-Insectrol-...

They also recommend taking out the clothes and shaking them regularly.

Moths go for dirty clothes, or dirty spots on clothes. So don't put away dirty clothes.

When putting away clothes for the summer / winter put them in a sealed plastic box with moth sachets.

I use the Rentokil spray ^^^ once per month year round.

Doesn't matter if they like the taste, if they've got far enough to find that out by having a chew it's a bit late.

Having read that story, when it comes to 'cures' all that comes to mind is a certain quote from Bronn in Game of Thrones...

Absolute menace. Little sts have destroyed some very expensive cashmere folded in drawers.

Cedar wood cubes, and even 'moth killing drawer sachets' effectively do f- all.

The only deterrent I have found is strong plastic Ziplock storage bags, like you'd use for the freezer. Fold all woollens and store in those, with the air squashed out.

What? "There's no cure for being a c**t?"

Bit harsh.

Found the larvae under door mats, sofa, corner unit, chest of drawers, bed,

I used some dog flea spray i found in the cupboard and gave carpets a damn good hoovering.
