Do you use a android phone connected with the email?

Export your contacts to whatever other mail. Or as a csv file.

Gmail back up their email automatically. Just buy the storage.
Think I pay about a fiver a month.

They provide availability, not backup, similar to other cloud email providers including Microsoft. You accidentally delete an email then it's deleted everywhere.

If you want to backup Gmail then pay a couple of quid every month to a provider who will take regular snapshots of your mailbox meaning you'll have recovery points.

I use Thunderbird on a Windows PC to download messages via POP (maybe IMAP). Just ensure you “leave messages on server”

Yes me too, Gmail happily syncs with desktop/mobile, as above leave a copy on server and when you delete on either, your desktop should resync, certainly outlook does and typeapp on mobile

Then if you want to go even further, you can then backup your desktop database too!!

I see you're in Bristol from your profile. Itec Group based there are good and they use Datto (previously Backupify) for Microsoft and Google backups.

AFI mentioned also look quite good. Looks like they sell both direct and indirect so if there was another IT company you already work with that could be a route too.

Have a look at Google Takeout.

Might not be as automated as you'd like but it's built in.

Another Thunderbird user here (albeit not on Windows), it's free, it integrates with Gmail mail, calendar and contacts and it all just works beautifully. It then just gets backed up with whatever backup strategy you use for the rest of your data.
