Dear worthy and knowledgeable folks of Pistonheads, I need a Renault 21 Turbo (UN1-13) gearbox/transaxle. I'm monitoring eBay and checking various other sources, of course, but if anyone has one for sale or can help directing me to one, I'd be grateful.

A cheap one with a snapped first motion (primary) shaft would be great, as I will be replacing that and some other bits anyway.

thanx, Pum.

I have a few possibilities shaping up from my other enquiries. There's the small possibility that more than one box will be available, so if anyone else wants one let me know and I'll see what I can do.

My memory is a bit hazy but wasn't that transmission also used in the Renault 25?

Yes the same basic unit was used in Renault 25, Alpine GTA, Alpine Turbo, and Renault 21 Turbo. However, each with slightly different gear and diff ratios. The Alpine Turbo box is the best, but the chances of getting are essentially nil. Next best ratios was the 21 Turbo, and there were quite a few of those made. More info here:

UN1 was also used in Lotus Esprit. Type numbers were something like 26, 27 and 28. These were the last UN1 boxes manufactured by Renault, but are also virtually impossible to buy secondhand at any kind of sensible money. I don't know the ratios on these, but suspect they are about the same as 21 Turbo. I suspect the main differences were strengthening, especially in the ones made for the Esprit V8.

Dunno if anyone contacted me via this post, but I've now received 5 offers of UN1 transaxles of various types, but all the more desirable ones.

It seems that quite a few people are changing their transaxle to the Audi 01E box found in A6 and A8. Consequently, they are selling their UN1 boxes, so supply may be slightly increasing.

For info, if anyone else is looking for one of these.

Hey I have a rebuilt UN1 for sale in the US if anybody is interested. The box is 100% perfect and as close to a new unit as you can get. I can send pictures of the box as well as the internals to show the perfect condition it is in. I can ship anywhere you need and if you are in the UK the weak US dollar will be in your favor. Email me at adamgrosso@hotmail.com if anybody is interested.
