Hi,

Round our way we're plagued by mobile speed trap vans that rotate around a bunch of known fixed locations, however I'm told they've now started to pop up in new places off the side of roads that make them very hard to spot.

I'm after a recommendation for a decent laser detection system.

I don't want anything GPS based as I know fine well where the old fixed locations they use are and I don't want something beeping at me all the time for empty trap spots while on local roads.

I'm aware jammers are now banned and I'm not after one of those, just a simple laser only detector that lets me know if my car has actually been "lit up" by the actual laser trap.

Google is full of crap american K band radar ste and even YouTube hasn't been much help.

Can anyone help??

Cheers

Don't bother, by the time it's zapped you it's too late...laser is so narrow unlike radar.
Slow down or use Waze to flag police locations

Isn’t the issue that if it can detect the laser then you have potentially already been measured for speed?

Yes, I know if I get zapped then its too late! That's the point, I want to know if I've been zapped or not so I don't have to wait 4 weeks for the ticket to arrive

You can't make the ticket arrive any quicker.

I used a laser detector in the early 2000’s it also had the benefit of picking up scattered light that hit the cars in front, which might give you fore warning in certain circumstances.

In the end I just slowed down and tried to minimise the times the speedo crept about the limit on motorways (I stuck to limits around towns).

Not sure how good they are now or how good Waze is for spotting issues, I can see a future where the fine is with you before you even get home at this rate or the car reports you itself….

You could always try sticking to the speed limit.

Oh, and i believe they are illegal to use.

Detectors are legal. There was discussion about banning them but for now they remain legal to sell and use. Jammers are illegal.

Years ago I used a Valentine detector, the best in its day. It worked ok but too many false positives. For example alerted me every time I passed a petrol station.

Maybe they’re better nowadays?

If you are the RK, they don't take 4 weeks to arrive. A matter of a few days

This one seems to at least addressed the problem of too many false positives in built up areas, see ‘City & Motorway Modes’:-

So the most reliable laser detector is Royal Mail.

I’d encourage to use Waze, regularly highlights before I can see them & also tells you they’re on your route as soon as you enter your destination

f you are not familiar if doesn’t flag known sites but instead live info from other users who you can also see ahead of you to gain some sense of security that one of them would’ve flagged a speed trap

Not just police - accidents, roadworks potholes, dead animals etc I find it very informative & use it on every drive through Apple car play instead of satnav

So you're doing 29 in a 30, laser operator zaps you and your detector alerts you. Next time you're doing 50 in a 30, laser operator zaps you and your detector alerts you.

How is having a detector going to give you any additional peace of mind?

It's 14 days if you're the RK, or could be a lot longer than 4 weeks if the car is leased.

I always though that Road Angels were the go to speed camera detector, I've never had one myself but my Dad did many years ago.

Their web site seems to mention laser detection:
