Engine swap & V5
Discussion
I have a bit of a dilemma - car is already purchased knowingly as a CAT N that has had the engine replaced like for like.
I have an invoice from the seller for the purchase of the engine, however this does not show the engine number.
It shows the VIN of the vehicle that the donor engine was taken from. From a vehicle check on the donor VIN I can see that this engine number matches the engine number in the purchased vehicle so it’s all legit.
Looking at the gov website, the document that the DVLA requires has to include the engine number. Is there anything else I can do to satisfy DVLA requirements so that I can get the V5 updated?

Personally I am not bothered, but I would like the V5 to match the current engine for resale.
I have everything documented in a folder for the car but I would imagine that the engine number on V5 not matching the one in the car might put a potential buyer off?
Have you ever checked the engine number on a car prior to purchase? I know I haven't.I have everything documented in a folder for the car but I would imagine that the engine number on V5 not matching the one in the car might put a potential buyer off?
I've swapped plenty of engines and the only time I've updated the v5 is if there's been a change in capacity or engine type.
Unless it's a genuine classic of big value I don't believe anyone cares.
I've never checked, never seen anyone check when I've sold a car either.
When I have wanted to check to find out if I had a specific engine it's generally been too hard to get to for me to bother, and that's on my own cars at home that I can jack up take bits off, do what ever I want with.

I had the same problem a couple of years back. I had bought a car a couple of years previously and although I had checked the VIN against the V5 I hadn't checked the engine number.
It wasn't until I was getting the car ready to sell that I noticed that the engine number didn't match the number on the V5.
I followed the process shown on the fourth point inder the heading "Change of engine number or cylinder capacity (cc)" on this DVLA document:
https://www.gov.uk/change-vehicle-details-registra...
It's specifically for cases where you buy a car where the previous owner has changed the engine and not changed the V5.
In short, I went to a local MOT Test garage and the guy came out and recorded the engine number on the car, then certified on one of the garage receipts that on the day he inspected it, the engine in the car was XYZ or whatever the number was. As I remember all I sent to the DVLA was the original V5 (suitably ammended) and the garage receipt. I got a suitably ammended V5 back in a few days.

No one cares
I'm a car dealer and I am one of the few who does check chassis numbers but I've never checked an engine number, most of the time they're impossible to see
No one I've sold to has ever asked about, let alone checked the engine number (or the chassis no.)
Started using a new (to me) local garage, and they’re the only ones who put the chassis number on an invoice.I'm a car dealer and I am one of the few who does check chassis numbers but I've never checked an engine number, most of the time they're impossible to see
