Going to Austria in February, a few nights in Salzburg and then a few in bischoffson. Any recommendations of things to do? Will have a 5 year old with us so things for kids too.

Will probably have one day to myself to do something purely adulting

Doesn’t look like it, or clear in the website whether I could do a fast car experience thing.

Il also add that I’m a ww2 history nerd, so anything cool to do in that sphere would fit. Would like to do zen am see.

The eagles nest is closed for a bus tour but I’m wondering if there is anyway of getting there at all? I think maybe a cable car.

Also have a spare last day and don’t actually need to stay in Salzburg or bischoffson, thinking maybe one day in Munich? But very open to anywhere within a 2 hour radius

There's a salt mine not that far away. It's a fun couple of hours and kids will probably enjoy it.

Beyond that, I found Salzburg pretty dull.

Zell am See is stunning

Eagles Nest would have been a good one but looks like it’s closed until May.

Potentially, none of us know how so could have a day of lessons. My boy would probably enjoy some sort of sledding etc

Some people may laugh at this, but I did it back in 2017 with my wife and thoroughly enjoyed it. Stunning scenery, stopped off in Mondsee (where the marriage of Maria and Gregor was filmed). We were fortunate that the Octoberfest had started. Salzburg airport has the RedBull hanger 7, where there are various interesting aircraft, including the B25, plus some RedBull racing cars.

Ever seen it and I’m pretty sure the missus hasn’t either lol

More inclined to search for the spot in band of brothers where they shoot the guy who is a concentration camp guard

Munich isn't too far on the train. We did Salzburg for the day from Munich on train a few years ago. Liked Salzburg though, there's a funicular railway up to a castle or something there, I remember going up on it. Found a lovely monastery type bierkeller in Salzburg too.

Hohenwerfen Castle. Good in its own right, but notable as the location in Where Eagles Dare.

Agree with Zell am See, Kitzbuhel is pretty too.

Not worth trying to ski for just 1 day, but there are loads of small ski resorts around for sledding.

The Augustiner brewery is a good experience.

Zell am See and the surrounding area is absolutely stunning.

Don’t arrive at Salzburg airport too early before your departure. It’s tiny and there are very few places to sit to eat/drink.

Great thank you! Will prob trade any notion of skiing for taking the boy sledding or what not.

We spend a lot of time about 1.5 hours from Salzburg each year around Bad Hofgastien. It’s all stunning around there and there’s already a few ideas on here that we’ve done previously.

The Grossglockner will be closed, but if you’re there in the summer, it’s well worth a trip. We did the Werfen ice caves a few years back, and that was pretty interesting.

The Blau Gans (Blue Goose) inn/restaurant is a staple of Salzburg and has been for many centuries. The schnitzel there is a must — one serving will feed two children if they’re not yet hungry teenagers.
