Hi Guys -

Quick question - I fired up the 997 this morning for the first time in a while -

Had this  slighly odd sound: sort of a 'fluttery whistle' on idle

Can anyone help diagnose what it might be?

Car was serviced less than 100 miles ago - hadn't run for about two/three weeks

Ambient temp slighly cold here (4 degrees C), but nothing unusual?

Cheers y'all

Might be as simple as one of those dried leaves being flicked by a fan?

Start with the easy stuff. Clear the leaves out.

[ Remembering that various fans can jump into life long after engine shutdown.Keep your fingers].

My guess is that it is a bit of moisture on the rubber drive belt for the alternator and ancillaries. I had something similar in a 996 Turbo S.

Fan/leaf or similar. Nothing major, just irritating. Hopefully only temporarily.

(My amateur diagnosis, of course...)

Bore score, probably cyl 3.

Just kidding wink my bet would be leaves in the heater vents.

I hope it's a leaf but that sounds like a pulley to me...

On non Mezger engines you can take the airbox out and remove the aux bellt and then start the engine. If the source of the noise is a pulley or something connected to the aux belt, AC pump, alternator etc then the noise will be gone. If it is one of these you can turn each one individually to ID the issue.

Not sure if it's the same on a Mezger
