Hi everyone, first post unbelievably as ive been looking through here for atleast a decade!

Im looking to purchase a used pickup, around the £20k mark ideally but can stretch to 30. I was pretty settled on a s6 l200 barbarian x, most are comfortably in budget, reliable and well optioned. Downsides spoken about are the dpf and emissions systems in general and lack of power, next pick would be a hilux but really it'd need to be an invincible with the 2.8 post 2022 and theyre more like 30-35k. I like the amaroks and rangers but i really value reliability and cost to repair over style, that being said i do want carplay as a minimum and some basic niceties like heated seats etc.

Any other recommendations or advice?

How about the Ssangyong/KGM Musso, you can pick up a top spec Saracen 22/23 still in warranty.

I did take a look at them as the local mitsubishi dealer became a kgm dealer that still service mitsubishi, theyre a decent truck for the price but ive read theyre obviously a bit more of a bare bones truck, i do want off road ability and the l200 and hilux are pretty much the best. Im not looking to buy too new as i dont want all the depreciation, it is seeming hard to not keep coming round to the l200. All the ausie reviews of pickups, the l200(triton) wins all the time,it seems an amazing truck thats a bit overlooked, shame they pulled out of the uk market.

I’d avoid a Dmax. I recently had one for a couple of years and to be fair it was great, but everywhere I looked online was full of stories of dpf problems, regen problems and oil dilution problems. I know you can have stuff done to avoid these and hope nobody notices but it did make me always feel on edge…. Then mine started to do the regen thing every 50 miles or so

We have had our 2016 L200 Barbarian for 6 years and nothing at all has gone wrong with it.

I don’t find it that underpowered really, it tows fine and any more and you’d just slide off the road sooner!

The only thing I’d swap it for is a ranger maybe.

Look for corrosion on L200s though. I rust proof ours yearly and I’m still fighting rust!

Depreciation will be frightening. A mate of mine was looking at them and thought it drove ok, like a generation behind current trucks but much cheaper. He got some lease quotes and couldn’t figure out why they were so much more expensive to lease than other much more expensive pickups - depreciation.

The 3.0d isn't a Nissan unit it's the well proven merc 3,0d which are nigh on bulletproof. Yes it's a rebadged Navara but that V6 & slightly nicer interior makes them a more relaxing place to be,

Try one,

If you can cope with LHD I'd take a look at the American pickups and run them on LPG - far more powerful and reliable

I've run F150 and Dodge Rams in the past averaging the equivalent of 30mpg whilst running a 5.7 V8

I do love the idea of importing a RHD American pickup from Australia. scratchchin

It’s not the size of them that’s the issue, it’s LHD that’s the PITA.

Welll I've got a 21 plate Hilux Invincible X, a colleague has the L200 Barbarian and another has a 2021-ish Ranger.

The L200 is a bit lethargic with its auto gearbox and has oil dilution and DPF issues about every 4000 miles. Other than that I think it's quite funky and not a bad place to be inside.

The Ford Ranger has the aggressive look about it and again I think it's quite smart inside BUT it has had the wet belt let go at less than 60,000 miles and is currently awaiting a brand new crate engine, out of its warranty period.

My Hilux as you can imagine has been problem free, maybe a bit more agricultural than the other two in true Japanese form. But I had an incident where I hit a deer in the road, it smashed the front bumper/grille assembly and broke the mountings of one headlight. The cost of the parts to repair the vehicle were absolutely astronomical!

Personally would I swap my Hilux for either of the others? Probably not if the truth be told.

One thing to consider is that the L200 is unusual in being able to be driven on 4wd on the road, a lot of other trucks don't have a center diff so can only use 4wd on low traction surfaces. It's handy in winter when conditions can be variable and it's certainly got enough off road capability for anything I'd put it through.

I've got a 2015 L200, in the last 4 years and 40k miles it's needed front brakes and a pair of rear shocks (which were cheap and easy to fit). It just keeps plodding on.
It's not a fast vehicle but most of the trucks aren't exactly rapid, it's towed and carried plenty for me with no issues.
I'd probably buy another one when this one gives up, after years of fickle German cars it's great to have something that always just works and will cope with pretty much any weather without complaint.

The Ranger, Amarock and I think Mercedes fall foul of the lower speed limits for tucks over 2050kg, lighter trucks like the Navara and L200 just have car speed limits.

For similar use, I bought a 2008 Touareg. Comfortable, good kit. Waiting for the reliability aspect to rear it's ugly head. We'll see. And about 1/10 of the budget.

Navara is spec dependent on that, those leather seats are heavy and take some models over the limit. Be careful out there!

And buy a Toyota. YKIMS.

How bad is the 2.4 engine in the Hilux? I've been looking at pickups myself, but my budget only extends to cover the 2.4 engine.

Don't know but I've got the 2.8 which gives out about 201 horsepower I think. You do see people complaining a bit about the 2.4's on the Hilux Facebook pages, but that may more be the folk who are pulling heavy loads with the 2.4 models.

Also the Hilux does fall into the lower speed limit category (although some people seem to debate this), it has never caused me a problem so far, but you just need to be mindful of it at times.

Depends what you're doing - hard to carry sheep or 8' posts in a Touareg

That's interesting, thanks for the reply. I will occasionally be towing my car with it, but I've managed that ok with my van and that's around 140bhp, similar to the quoted 150 or so bhp for the Hilux.

Sorry for the thread hijack op.
