Following on from the lane discipline thread.

Why do the majority of drivers insist on queuing up in the inside lane, causing huge tailbacks when two lanes are asked to merge due to roadworks or traffic calming?

The highway code says you should use both lanes and then 'zip' in at the end.

I do this and sometimes pass what seems like a mile worth of cars all queuing up. You get some folk mainly in vans that will try and block drivers obeying the highway code, which leads to them getting angry at me just laughing at their stupidity.

On the odd occasion when I'm not up for any confrontation I will que up with them, but after having two or three cars bomb by in the outside lane I always end up pulling out and joining them anyway.

This is piston heads so I presume there are some on here that believe that using both lanes when others have been queuing for a long time us very antisocial! If so why is it better to create huge tailbacks ??

Because they don’t understand the Highway Code or how to drive. Same morons that hog the middle or outside lanes of motorways and are bemused by all the switches in their car and what they might do.

Hopeless.

The same people line up at the gate in a queue before the plane has even landed.

I think it's those with a propensity to blame others for their own mistakes. It's easy enough to find one's self joining the back of a queue having just overtaken several others, only to then realise that there's an empty lane to your right that those others now make use of. If you are in possession of this kind of mentality you will blame "them" for cheating rather than blame yourself for queuing too early.

I generally can't be bothered battling with idiots, so I'll stick with the "continuing" lane and let people from the closing lane in as and when they need to, always try to leave enough of a gap to allow for them coming in. Do this pretty much every day on my commute home when the road drops from 3 lanes to 2 after a junction. It's going to be walking pace for another half a mile anyway, so who cares.

Another factor is that it's a lot easier to be the "nice" one letting people in to maintain flow than trying to rely on other people driving properly, but it depends what you're driving and who it is you're needing to let you merge.

Does annoy me when I make the effort to let a car merge, and the driver behind me is clearly trying to close up to my bumper to prevent someone else getting in rather than taking their "turn" to do the same. I'll usually just continue to hang back a bit if I see this happening, so the person they're trying to close the door on can use "my" gap instead.

I was on a ‘two into one’ DC yesterday where the road naturally went from two lanes to one rather than because of roadworks. Anyway, there was a bigger queue in L1 than L2 but people were merging naturally at the merge point, and as I was in no hurry was happy to stay in L1 crawling along with everyone else.

As we got closer to the merge point I noticed the car behind getting closer and closer until all I could see of it was from the wipers upward. They weren’t letting anyone in regardless. So I eased up a bit and waved the car in L2 forward into the gap. Then did the same with the next one, and the next one again. All the time we were still moving, and once past the pinch point sped up slightly. The look on the driver’s face was hilarious, they were absolutely apoplectic, bouncing up and down in their seat waving their arms. So I let another one through, for which I got a blast on the horn. The daft thing was though that as soon as we got up to normal speed about 100yds or so later they turned off. Merry Mental Christmas.

We need more people like you Dave. Tbf when I get to the end I never have major issues being let in.

I regularly travel on the Worcester to Kidderminster road where there are traffic calming lane mergers every 1000 or so yards. That road is a nightmare when traffic is heavy. You might as get rid of the outside lane for the majority of drivers.

That road reduces from two lanes to one where there is access through the central reservation for road junctions or just a side junction. It is also a 50mph limit from the Kidderminster end until fairly close to roundabout at the Worcester end. It's difficult to overtake in the 2 lane sections as the traffic is usually at, or close to, the 50 limit.

I use that road a few times a year on journies from near Stroud to Shrewsbury.

What difference does it make how many lanes are in use on the approach? If there is one lane through the obstruction then that's the capacity of that stretch of road.

It can double the length of the tailback, though. I attended a fatal accident where a wagon driver had played 'road captain' and blocked the outside lane of a slip road down to some roadworks, forcing the queuing traffic back on to the main motorway with the inevitable result when L1 came to a standstill completely unnecessarily. Utter stupidity.

I would have had no hesitation in making an official complaint against the force concerned.
