Reliable daily 4k max budget
Discussion
Evening all,
Looking for other people's thoughts on cars, I have had a few dud cars back to back recently and with my recent purchase of my first house, I need a car that is reliable, economical, fun would be nice but I'm all honestly not that important (my partner owns a BMW 4 series that's the fun car)
I've got a 2010 Clubman Cooper S that needs to go as it just too small, I used to really love minis and still do, but the so and so reliability uncomfortable ride, time to move on.
For context: I currently live in the North West and do the odd around town travel, but frequently do a lot of journeys upwards of 30 minutes or longer more motorway than stop start traffic, my partner and I also spent a lot of time in rural countryside walking we currently have 3 dogs so need to be able to accommodate cages and hiking gear that can be chucked I'm the back without a thought. It's not my daily driver as I walk to work as I live near my work office. Finally to note, I frequently make 250 mile trips to see family down near Winchester so ideally needs to be able handle a 4 hour journey comfortably. Petrol or diesel I'm not overly fussed and same goes for manual or auto, as for ULEZ my Mrs has a ULEZ complaint car and we very rarely drive anywhere where we need it. And finally needs to be Mrs approved 😂
Cars I've been looking at:
Toyota Rav4 2008-12 (front runner at the moment due to Toyota reliability and family previously owning one with very good experience and grew up with one so know they are good)
Honda CRV 2008-12 (another front runner, heard the petrol is a better shout than the diesel)
Nissan Qashqai 2008-14 (have read some horrible things about it's reliability)
Honda CRZ (love the look of these, Honda reliability, but not sure if it's big enough if currently a R55 Mini Clubman isn't, I have driven one before but remember it being a very small car)
Land Rover Freelander2 (I have read very mixed things reliability, I do like the look for these)
Vauxhall Astra GTC (I can't find a great deal on these but my partner says alot of her friends have had bad experiences with Vauxhall for reliability)
Kia Sportage (like the look for these but again can't find a great deal of reliability information online)
That's a few of the cars I've been looking at, it's a massive net I've cast myself but looking to see what other people's experiences are to help narrow the search radius
My musts are:
Cruise control
Heated seats
Under £4k
In an extreme circumstance, I can stretch that to 4.5k but the lower I can get it, the better.
Any questions please ask and hit me with your thoughts and opinions.

at any price cars are a gamble, but ive worked in the trade 40 years and only buy honda if that helps
I appreciate the response, when you say honda, any in particular engine diesel, petrol, manual, auto what's your overall experience been like with them. What models have you owned?I'd agree with Honda and my preference is always petrol, although I think the 2.2 diesel has a pretty good reputation, the 2.0 petrol is pretty much bulletproof. Our current dog car is £1200s-worth of 2006 CRV (mk2, our second example) and after 2 years it has cost nothing other than consumables and is phenomenally practical.

Not too easy to find in that price bracket but a Mazda 6 or CX-5 2.0 petrol will be likely to prove very reliable .
Sport spec has the cruise and heated seats
I've definitely been looking for those, as you said difficult within the price bracket. As I like what's on offer with Mazda.Sport spec has the cruise and heated seats

Skoda Yeti in 1.2tsi or 1.4tsi versions. Avoid the 1.8tsi. Same for an Octavia.
Leftfield choice of a Subaru Forester or Outback, but these will be older, and potentially quite high tax.
Do love the idea of a Subaru, but sheer price of tax and the poor mpg does put me off. Leftfield choice of a Subaru Forester or Outback, but these will be older, and potentially quite high tax.
Anything to look out of on the Skoda 1.2/ 1.4tsi?

I really wouldn't recommend the astra gtc, why not go for a civic type s instead?
Choice of either 1.8 petrol which is both reliable and economical or the 2.2 diesel.

The GTC's are good cars but I don't think they're big enough for your requirements.
The Insignia estate makes a lot of sense, you'll get a beyyer car for your money.

Similar situation for me a few months ago coming from an R55 Clubman.
I ended up with a Mazda 3 2.0 Sport 2010 my.
It has a shed loaded of extras including cruise, heated seats, BOSE sound system, electric everything etc etc.
Paid £2.5k with 75,000 miles, FSH, 1 previous owner and full MOT and it’s been brilliant. Far more capable for distance work than the Mini, albeit at an obvious MPG penalty to the R55, but ticks all boxes elsewhere and a lot of car for the money I feel. Well worth a look
