£10k budget - discovery 4 possible or asking for trouble?

Hi all, so our lease is about to expire on the terrible terrible juke and we’re keen to replace it with something t larger.
We’ve looked at xc90s in budget but they’re very dated at this price point.
Seen a few D4 about but wondered if at this price it’s just an expensive repair bill waiting.
We’re keen for a larger suv, we’ve got a vw caravelle which is used daily but with 2 big dogs, and family being loaded up we do want something quite large as a second vehicle.
Whenever one of us is out (me for a cycling event for example) it’s a pain on the other being left with the car with no space to load everyone up.

Yeah that would work for me but it’s too small for everything else. We’ve had a 60 before and was fine with 1 dog, but with 2 we won’t get the cage in sadly.
We’ll be keeping the caravelle but we’re keen on 2 vehicles that can do the job so it doesn’t matter what one is used by who and when

Having had a quick search on here seems 10k buys a 2012/3 with anything from 110k up.
We've just pxd a rrs with same 3.0 sdv6, late 15 done 55k and it went not because it was going wrong but the niggling doubt about when it would go wrong. The local land rover apecalist has a yard of sdv6 cars with blown engines waiting on people deciding of they're worth fixing because they're 10k cars that need thousands spent.
I love Land Rovers but sadly modern 'cheaper' Lr's will throw big bills and there's no easy way around it unless your handy and can fit 2nd hand parts, even then you need the right software half the time to get it back working.
Honestly not sure what 10k would buy that's big and reliable, sad world we live in where everything seems a fortune

We just got a D4 and absolutely love it.
It’s a 2014 with 100k miles on which was a bit over your budget at 12500 but you should be able to get a decent one for £10k.
Don’t be put off by the snapped crank thing too much, just make sure it’s been serviced regularly and carry on doing so (6k miles ideally).
I was looking for one around the £8k mark, but everyone I called up had either sold it, or had changed their mind and decided to keep.
The only thing wrong with ours I can find is that the aircon doesn’t work, other than that it’s ace

957 Cayenne with the 3.6 V6. Have a look at popopbangbangs thread where he took his accross the sahara, lot of car for the money and properly built, without the v8's potential issues and the 2nd gen V6 has plenty of power with some of the weaknesses fixed.

I was in the same position as you 7 months ago, my shortlist:
D4 Disco (I have a D2 already)
L322 4.4 TDV8 with the 8 speed ZF box
Audi Q7 with the 4.2 V8 and 8 Speed ZF
Merc/Volvo I didn't consider as I'm not as familiar with them.
I opted for the Audi as I'd already got Vag-Com and it hit a sweet spot of V8 + 7 Seats. So far I've serviced it and replaced wheel speed sensors.
I would have been comfortable with a D4 too, nothing is 100% reliable, and the aftermarket and LR community are awash with good info and guides on known issues.

More tips from me on the D4, 2012 onwards has the 8 speed box (rotary selector). Before that it’s the 6 speed which also isn’t bad, but the 8 speed is better.
All engines are pretty much the same, if you can get facelift (2013-14 onwards I think) one you don’t get the £700 per year road tax, it’s £400ish. An easy way to tell this is it says DISCOVERY on the bonnet not LAND ROVER.
The engine is great actually, lots of torque and returns a consistent 30mpg. My wife has had 38 on a run, but I’ve not
In terms of snapped cranks, if you look at how many D4s are on the road the next time you go out, it’s pretty obvious it’s not as widespread as people think. The D4 is actually known as one of the most reliable Land Rovers, after the FL2. The issue is actually caused by a spun bearing, for some reason Peugeot didn’t put locator tabs on the crank bearings so they spin if there is remotely more than normal friction in the oil. This causes the oil galleries to be blocked by the bearing, which seizes the crank.
Mileage doesn’t seem to really affect them either, other than the start button you couldn’t tell ours has done 100k miles.
Ours (an HSE) has a timed diesel heater which is awesome in this weather. It was also much better than I expected in the recent snow, despite having road tyres.
Cam belt should be done around 90k miles so check that’s been done. They also eat bushes as they are heavy cars.

I settled on the theory this German chap has (ex-engineer, does loads of engine swaps and rebuilds with his Mrs).
The engine almost completely drains of oil over night, due to location of oil pump and oil filter it can take some time for the oil galleries to fill back up (a couple of seconds or more), these 3.0 turbo diesel engines produce huge amounts of torque at very low revs.
Owner jumps in, hits the starter button, slight revs (foot resting on accelerator), max torque produced whilst the crank bearings have no oil = massive wear.
Answer is - press starter button, do not press accelerator at all, count to 5, before selecting gear.
(It might be the equivalent of saluting a magpie, or rubbing a rabit's foot, but its my religious start up ritual)

With the D4 at least you have a dipstick, so you could use a vacuum extractor to perform interim oil services with relative ease for peace of mind.
I certainly preferred my old D4 to the D5 SDV6 that I am running presently, on a number of levels (no dipstick being one!) and I could potentially see myself going back to a D4 despite having suffered a few of the usual snags with it (FBH, Air Suspension Compressor, and Alternator all needed replacing between 3 & 5 yrs old).
