Relaying Patio

I am about to lift my patio to relay it. I did it six years ago but the cement has washed away and weeds growing through. I have a good base so will clear of weeds, relevel it and then put weed sheet down before laying new cement and relaying slabs.

Slabs are indian stone. Is it best using sharp or builders sand? And mix with cement on what ratio? Does it make a difference what weed matting I use, double sheeting maybe?

Later I will be redoing drive. It is a load of old road plainings on top of stone right now. I will clear weeds and level then use more plainings and top with gravel. Is there a different weed sheeting recommended for drives or is it all just the same stuff?

I used this under MOT Type 1 and gravel at our last house. No weeds for the 4 years I remained there

Good to know, thanks. Mind you would be pricey I would need about three to four rolls!

add SBR to the mix, and butter an SBR/ water mix onto the back of the slabs with a paintbursh before laying. MEans tehy wont move any more.

For geo textiles I always used Growtivation.

Not the cheapest but in the 10 or so years we used it never had a single problem.

basic spec of which you won't need it all but as follows:

dig out 8-12' depth depending on ground conditions. I will assume its not bad where you are so about 8" depth

non woven membrane. the woven black stuff holds water, its more for keeping beds weed free. non woven is for things like this.

type 1 base. approx 100mm deep. compact in 2 layers several times each layer.

full bed of muck for the slabs sharp sand and cement 5:1

try as hard as you can to have 100% coverage as sandstone is porus so any voids will reflect through the slabs.

Use a proper primer like ultra scape paving primer. id avoid sbr as it can be mega messy and technically its not right to use. A proper primer is much much easier to clean off (of everything) than sbr. using sbr also means it needs to be mixed right which can obviously go a bit wrong.

Joint with a cement based product or a proper 2 part resin product.
