have around £20k for a next car. thinking porsche, the cayenne and macan seem interesting propositions.

will be aiming for a ulez 2016 + one.

Anything to look out for? Is cayenne a lot better than the macan?

Macan for round town but cayenne if you do a lot of motorway mileage and are tall ( as I am ) . The cayenne cabin is a bit more spacious for long trips.

Both are big cars! Try parking one in a supermarket car park!
Had a Macan and one thing you notice is the footwells are quite narrow due to the transmission tunnel with no footrest for your left foot (from what I recall).
Both are great cars and am actually thinking of going back to one for my wife at a slightly higher price point than what you are searching for. There are some decent ones around.
I’ve driven nearly all versions (both petrol & diesel) - I would avoid the 2.0 petrol Macan as it’s a heavy car so fuel economy isn’t great.
The 4.2 V8 diesel Cayenne is fantastic but would assume insurance may be expensive.
Up your budget slightly and you’ll get a lower mileage one of either model.

I second the recommendation to avoid 2.0 petrol engined Macans. I’ve had two rentals and they felt underpowered. 2.9 S (which I had as courtesy car) and 3.6 Turbo (what I own) are great.
I disagree Macan is a large car. 5 meter long Cayenne is, it’s the same size as Q7, Bentayga, GLE, XC90, etc. Macan is good 35cm shorter which makes a lot of difference. I park mine in all kinds of spaces in London, airport, supermaket car parks, no problem.

It’s more the width that is the problem - only 67mm (that’s about 2 inches) between a Macan and a Cayenne, both over 2090mm wide.
I noticed it when we took our then 4 month old Macan to Cornwall and two cars definitely didn’t fit on some of the roads with a few squeaky bum moments and grass brushing either side on some single track lanes.
Great car to drive though.

I've got a cayenne, but i have a kid and MIL to haul around.

If i was a carefree young buck i'd get the Macan

There are some really low specced ones out there so choose carefully

Has the transfer case recall been done , or at least the fluids been upgraded , Porsche offered an extended warranty to 7 years on the TC , my local OPC were very helpful when I enquired.

If you were a carefree young buck would you really drive either? both seem to sit firmly in the family car segment to me but that's not a criticism as I do very much like the Cayenne and would like one in my life at some point. From a masochistic point of view i quite like the idea of buying a very early Cayenne just to see how ruinous it could be

I had a macan GTS which was defo a fun car but I don’t think you would get one for your budget.
I also had a 2 litre petrol one that wasnt exciting but was a decent all rounder and I never found it slow - I went down a wheel size on that car so I could get larger tyres as opposed to low profile tyres - made it a lot more comfy - especially with pot holes etc

Point taken smile maybe i should have said 911/Boxster. I'm guessing the OP needs something a bit more practical that at least feels sporty, i am impressed with the way mine goes round corners. It seems pretty tidy for a large SUV , better than my E83 X3. I'd assume a light smaller Macan would be even better, especially with PASM

Before my 4.2 I ran a 2004 Cayenne 4.5s for 2 years. The only non service expense was the propshaft bearing thing, £575 . Both wing mirrors needed replacing but that was 2x accidents so not really the cars fault.

Oh yes the transfer case. I had mine replaced by Porsche in 2023 (car is 2018 Turbo).

I owned a 2003 4.5S for 11 years - sold it earlier this year because I hardly used it and got a bit annoyed having to tax 3 cars in the same month (bad planning!).

It was a car I bought with the intention of selling after 6 months - but it was just a brilliant car. Obviously plenty of space and comfortable, but it was surprisingly fun if you wanted it to be.
Hardly ever went wrong in my ownership - think I did about 40k miles in it, and it was about 120k when I sold it.

Surprisingly - despite me thinking it was the dullest car ever when I bought it (I needed it for something specific) - it would be quite high on the list of cars I've enjoyed owning

I put 325,000km on a 2008 Cayenne S and only had one really big item ( camshaft lifters at 225,000Km), I had 50,000km of it towing a car on a trailer across enormous distances. I have a 2022 Cayenne GTS right now ( 35,000km and it has been flawless).

We had a 2016 Cayenne PHEV which is worth considering if you do many short journeys around town. Comfortable car and well appointed interior but they are prone to electrical gremlins and ours had a few.
