Buyer wants to send transport to pick up car
Discussion
Hi , i have done a search for information on this but hoping for any updated information that i may have missed..
Car is on for auction and a potential bidder as contacted me via Ebay messages asking for Shiply to pick up (if he wins) he says he will send money.
First time selling a car on Ebay so just want to make sure i am doing all the checks .
I have asked for verification, name address driving licence ,with photos .He is a 12 month member on Ebay with just 112 feed back with a few bits relating to the car is potential looking to buy so at the moment it looks OK ...
Im pretty sure that if he does a Bank transfer and it lands in my account then i can assume i can go ahead with filling in the V5 and he cant reverse it ..
He also said he is a member of a car club where he lives and he as given me the name of the club ,he also says he is 70 year old and he loves MGs and this could be is last one ,maybe i am overthinking it all ...Any other tips i can do would be appreciated if any ..Thanks

I'd be asking for the ID as you have, having a chat (you phone him) and asking for payment by bank transfer with the car being collected after five days.
I'd be highly suspicious of any request to pay and collect on the same day, even more so over a weekend. Bank transfer is safe UNLESS it's from a hacked account which is why I'd want a gap when I can get my bank to confirm the transfer is legit in writing. That gives me another layer of protection if it's later recalled and I'm £XXX in the red.
Others may be more trusting and I'm not saying my advice is the best. That's what I would do. All under the assumption this isn't just a couple of grand car.

Does distance selling rules come into play?
We had grief with a horse we sold, we were genuine, but she found an issue and complained, started quoting distance selling rules as she'd had it collected. We ended up paying transport to get it back and refund just to get rid of her. Transporter who bought horse back was local to her and said she was a regular at it, would buy unseen (even after telling us she never did so but on the one occasion would take a chance) and then return at drop of a hat stating as she'd bought unseen law was on her side etc.
Life's short and on a 1200 quid horse I couldn't be bothered to argue the toss

ONLY if the vendor is a business. We had grief with a horse we sold, we were genuine, but she found an issue and complained, started quoting distance selling rules as she'd had it collected. BUT if the purchaser arranges someone to collect the goods from a business that someone becomes the purchaser's agent and so distance regs do not apply.
Once the auction's finished you'll find it allows you to exchange phone numbers, I'm guessing the reason they put so much effort into blocking phone numbers when an auction is live is to avoid people agreeing a sale and then cancelling the auction (as eBay would then miss out on fees)
Certainly when I bought my last car that was the case
It sounds genuine to me, at the end of the day I wouldn't worry too much about it now - as the auction is still running

Could the potential buyer not arrange to view the car prior to the auction ending, which I assume is allowed... then you could discuss. This is why I hate auctions, if I'm buying at distance / unseen then I'd like to speak to the seller first. Car & Classic are the same, all has to be via message on the auction site... unless you arrange to view.
I wouldn't have any issues with it being collected, if you've made contact, have ID, cross checked and he's happy to pay the full amount by the time the car is being loaded, then what more can you do. Taking payment five days in advance seems strong... plus devils advocate but then the buyer is trusting you to have the car and the full amount for a duration?
Needs to be mutual trust on both sides, sadly that's not always hod it works but without some trust, we'd never buy it sell anything.

I did this (as a buyer) a couple of years ago for a Renault Clio that I'd seen advertised on Car & Classic but was at the other end of the country. I spoke to the seller to get a feel for him and the car and was upfront in telling him I'd need to get it collected and transported to me. It went seamlessly ( which as a pessimist I was surprised about) and although I sold it a year later for a profit I really regret selling it. So if it's the right car for the buyer then work with them. I paid in full for the car when the driver rang me to confirm that they were at the collection address and the car was as described. Modern technology makes all this much easier than when I first started buying cars!

I sold a car via eBay (a Fiat Tempra) to a chap who used Shiply to arrange collection in 2017.
He paid by transfer before it was collected. It was only about £1200 but I didn't ask for id or anything, it was going to Scotland, his money was as good as anybody's.
It all went fine, it does happen.
