Good afternoon,

I am after a used 4x4.

Muddy walks, dogs, kids, transporting paddle boards, driving through woods etc.

Fully aware that an XC70 or similar would be fine but would like to try a ‘full size’ thing.

Budget up to £5000 but happy with less. Ideally petrol. 5+ cylinders.

We have other cars so can compromise as needed.

Thoughts so far:

Discovery 2 TD5 - questionable build but have a certain charm.
Range Rover 4.2/4.4 petrol - as above.
Mercedes ML - not sure I really like them.
VW Touareg - don’t know much about them.
Land Cruiser - out of budget or really ropey.
Nissan Patrol - not many around.
Mitsubishi Shogun - not many around.

Any other thoughts or good places to find them?

Thank you,

Junglie

Do you enjoy welding and regular car repairs? Unfortunately £5k on a large 4x4 doesn't go very far.

I was recently looking at a Shogun for my partner upto £10k, but even then they are 15 years old or 150k miles or both. I don't have a problem with older cars, but a 15 year old Shogun seems to be a real gamble with rust.

Do you really need a 4x4, if not save your money and buy something else for £5k. You should be able to get something quicker, more efficient and probably more comfortable.

Are you able to fix/ maintain stuff yourself? That might influence the choices somewhat. All the 4x4s in this category will be pretty maintenance heavy, some worse than others. I'm biased towards Jeep as I run a v8 Grand Cherokee, however I'd be bankrupt fairly fast if I had to pay a mechanic to do all the work on it.

Something like a Freelander 2 would be less hassle and there are plenty to choose from, but lacking some of the proper 4x4 credentials.

I can do basic maintenance (oil, filters, fluids, brakes etc) so can save somewhat.

Won’t be doing many miles so hopefully we can increase mean time between failures!

A Jeep of some description might be a good choice.

Don't think a 5k will get you a Patrol unfortunately, maybe a high miler Pathfinder, not quite the same coolness though.

Cayenne?

I'd probaby go Disco 2 for the money, really cool cars. If you could find a well maintained stock one it'd be good.

You’ll get a decent Hilux for that. We just bought this before Christmas with a year MOT. 2.5 HL3, basic but drives well and ideal for the dirty jobs. £5k, 95k miles.

E53 X5? We really liked our 3.0i, still miss the old warhorse.

Nicely built inside, spacious and good on-road. Put some sensible tyres on them and they are surprisingly capable off road with hill descent control and X Drive.

£5k would get you a nice late petrol 4.4 or 3.0

I've had a craving for a 3.2 V6 Shogun for some time. There are a few about at £5k, both LWB & SWB.

Otherwise I'd be looking at pickups - you'll get a high-mileage 3.0 V6 Navara if you're lucky at £5k. Otherwise you'll need to drop to 4-cyl to open your options.

Hilux, L200, Navara, Ranger Dmax etc.

Crikey that’s a good deal.

With paddle boards on the roof, any 4WD estate should be fine

Lots around in that kind of price range.

You know, I work with a fella with the same name as you - you’re not in the North West are you?
