More than 6,000 islands make up the British Isles. Roughly 250 of them are permanently inhabited.

In 70 years I've managed to visit eight of them.

It's pathetic. I may have missed one or two but it's still pathetic for an island dweller. I haven't even been to Ireland.

Please tell me you've done better.

I've done a bit better, most of the habited ones in England/Wales. I lived on one of England's islands. Most of the habited ones are in Scotland, I still haven't done those.

Earlier this year we drove to the far end of Yell which is the most northerly place you can drive in the uk. We were the only people there and it was truly beautiful.




Other than that, we have done a lot of the Scottish islands (inner and outer Hebrides), IoW, Holy Island, Lundi Island, Hayling (does this count?) The Scilly Islands, Anglesey, IoM, Orkneys, Shetlands, Channel Islands

Also kayaked round Looe island and been on a boat trip to Mull but didn't set foot on either.

I guess it depends on which definition of islands is being use, Worms head is a tidal island and Portland is a tied island, there are also non coastal island in non tidal lakes lochs and rivers. Purbeck isn't any of these

In your defence, once you've met the people on Sheppey or the Isle if Wight, you're going to be terrified of visiting any of the other islands in case they're the same or worse.
