Which Tomtom?

Left to her own devices, Mrs Sparky has the navigational ability of a bar of soap.
As her present job involves more extensive travel, now would seem a good time to get satnav. As we have a number of vehicles, a portable system would seem the best way forward and the general consensus of PHers suggests Tomtom is the best system.
Apart from the European maps, I gather that the main difference between the 300 and the 500 is the ability to use be used as a handsfree system for ones mobile phone.

Does anyone who's had experience of these systems think the 500 is worth the extra £100 to £120 given that there are other cheaper handsfree options?

If what you are looking for is NAVIGATION - go for the cheapest TomTom. If you want traffic info etc go for the more expensive options.

A Garmin Quest unit is portable from car to car and is cheaper than the Tom Tom units.

From what I've seen its slightly more hard wearing too, but have yet to see full Tom Tom range close up.

My TomTom has had a year of abuse (including a friend dropping it! ) and it's still going. Good bit of kit... and you can hear it over the exhaust of the Chimaera (mine isn't quiet) at motorway speeds with the roof off...
