Question re titles of partners

If a married man gets knighted he becomes Sir xxxx his wife becomes Lady xxxx
If he were single at the time ,and later marries his wife becomes Lady xxxx

BUT a woman either single or married who becomes a Dame , their partner remains Mr same sex marriage Mrs?

Now What happens in the case of Elton John and Stephen Fry

They are now Sirs, what are their partners titles?

The Lady bit isn’t a title it’s more of a courtesy. Dame and sir are titles.

Gentlemen could be used but it sounds silly, which is the case with Lady if you think about it.

It’s just a nonsense really.
