Hi all,

Haven't posted in a while but having a bit of a dilemma and could do with some opinion as there are perhaps things i haven't considered!

I'm in the market for a 2nd / weekend car. Family car is a Model Y Performance, and as good as electric is, I'm missing the drama and fun of a fast petrol car.

Budget is anywhere between £80-£90k really, but that's not a limit, I'd just rather not spend more (but will for the right car).

I'm totally torn between heart and head. I keep going back and forth between a 2017-2018 R8 V10 Plus and a 2019-2020 992 911 Carrera 4s (which i would get stage 1 tuned to similar power to the R8).

Car will be used for a mixture of 1/2 day commute for the wife (3 miles way), weekend use, going to play golf, going out for lunch or to a spa day with the wife etc.

My heart says R8 but the reason the Porsche keeps coming back into the picture is for two reasons:

1. For me it looks less flashy than the R8 (wife would use it for work once or twice a week and not sure an R8 sends the right message).

2. The kids could get in the back of the Porsche; which means she wouldn't have to use it for work, could take the Tesla and we'd have two cars that could accommodate the kids.

Now getting the kids in isn't by any means part of the criteria for having this car. We can manage using the Tesla for all those duties. But if the Porsche is going to be just as good does it make sense?

So i guess the questions are: Would a mapped (580bhp ish) 992 Carrera 4s feel as special and as fun as the V10 R8? Would i regret not having that amazing V10 behind my head? Would i be unnecessarily compromising, or are the Porsches just that good?

Any other thoughts or opinions?

The R8, (for me) is all, ALL and only about the engine....and there's nothing wrong with that, its an iconic lump.
But aside from the svelte mk1 V8, I never jelled with the design of it as it went through the refreshes and re-designs.
And yes, adding a touch of snobbery I didn't want that badge and that family aesthetic looming over it all.

The 911 is ubiquitous, which can/is also be seen as a bad thing with that snob-hat on....but the badge and aesthetic would allow me to see past that... I would however be choosing one with a drivetrain that has more about it than the turbo'd lump... A GT3 with rear seat added back in, maybe.... any NA performance biased model...GTS, T etc.

I had this exact same situation 2 years ago. I had your two chosen cars in my shortlist, but ultimately went Boxster Spyder for selfish personal and subjective reasons.
An Aston Martin Vantage was next.. 2014 S model, manual

£80-90k... it's Porsche, Aston or Ferrari for me.

The only thing I'd add, is, really enjoy the journey of choosing... smile

Saying that you want to play golf...how do the two cars compare for easily transporting golf clubs?

I think both would struggle or mean a squeeze in behind the seats? Both being frunk/froot only with some behind-the-seats shelving?

Would it be for a blast, or a nice cruise? If so, would you be better looking at an amazing GT car (Conti GT, DB11, Gran Truismo) with a front engine and proper boot?

I’ve had a few 911’s albeit my last one was a 997 C4 GTS so maybe not fair to compare to a 992.
I currently have a V10 performance + as one of my cars.
For what you have outlined as use the 992 would tick more boxes.
For out and out driving performance and with a never to be repeated normally aspirated V10 sitting on show behind your head the R8 would win.
Yes the badge snobbery worries some but in terms of the build quality it is superbly put together.
Mine is 3 years old so suffers a bit from having gpf pipes so from the inside at least is a little too quiet for my liking.
I used the 4S as a daily to commute in so as such didn’t feel particularly special as a weekend car but at the time also had a GT3 so that wasn’t an issue.
Running costs inc warranty will probably be cheaper on the Porsche if that’s a concern.
Porsche will only need a service every 2 years.
More space or should I say usable space in the Porsche.
That said I had a luggage set made for the R8 which in effect means 7 different bags possible.
Given they are so different you and your wife probably need to drive both first.
The R8 will feel a lot bigger ( and is ) albeit once you get used to it I found it not an issue - multi story car parks aside.
