I watched something on TV a few years ago about him, and he seemed to have been permanently damaged by the drink and drugs - a shadow of his former self. His partner seemed to be a good chap though, sticking with him through the hard times.

Sad. A man who's talent could/should have taken him to greater heights

Remember watching him on Who s Line is it Anyway.

Talented guy always pushing the boundaries but typically his demons were to be his downfall unfortunately.

When I saw this trending my first thought it was one of those old stories that everyone rushes to as social media had wrongly announced a death - because I could have sworn he died a couple of years ago.

I think I must have read the news story from 2020 about the documentary about his issues and because of the tone remembered it as an obituary https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-5276...

Exactly my recollection too, to the point I checked the date of the article on the BBC website twice as I assumed it was mistakenly on the main page.

Mandela Effect.

I presume it was because John Sessions died in 2020 and I've watched the documentary and it's twisted my recollection.

He was buggered aged 8 by a priest (so i wont say rest in peace as i hope he's nowhere near religion), he was diagnosed Bi Polar or Manic Depression as i prefer (i have it). The drink and drugs were certainly a contributing factor but in this case very much the egg to the chicken.
If you look back at his early performances you can see his talent was a lot to do with the manic side of his illness, obviously the flip side is the depressive part. Tough thing to deal with as you see and experience every part of the human condition.
Worth watching the documentary about him 'What's the Matter With Tony Slattery?'

Hoedown was the highlight of the week back then

Wouldn’t have been the genius he was without the manic side unfortunately

Same here lol, though I was never confused about Mandela.
