I'm in negotiations with a Mercedes dealership at the moment as I'm wanting to take out a business lease on a new car. The car currently has a 0% offer on and the dealership has given me a quote, however they have just said to me that that quote may be adjusted before delivery if that offer is withdrawn in the meantime. I queried with them asking that even if I order a car now and sign the agreement they could still change the price before I took delivery and they said yes.

Surely they can't do this can they? Who would sign up to an agreement that they're not sure what they would be paying on? I'm hoping the salesperson is wrong otherwise I certainly won't be ordering the car and will give Mercedes a very wide berth in the future.

Doesn’t sound right at all.

Sometimes cars have to be delivered within a certain time period to get the deal, but that is normally highlighted when you sign.

When you say lease deal and 0% finance that doesn’t sound right either. Is it lease, PCP or HP?

We've definitely seen prices go up, c especially with long lead times. Lotus did it with the emira. But you weren't committed to buying it until they had built it and given a firm price

It's business lease but obviously these are influenced by the deals that are on at the time. AFAIK a lease is still considered as finance and so will be affected by interest rates.

Yeah I beleive that's the case but that's no good if your current lease is coming to and end, or in my case arranged to sell a private car because if you don't go ahead with the new lease deal you'd end up car-less frown

Yes, completely understand the problem. How long is the new car lead time?

You need to ask by what date the car needs to be delivered to obtain the current deal.

Yep thumbup I'm trying to get a definitive date but all I've got back so far is "the delivery quarter" which is as vague as it gets rolleyes

IME this is normal. The price and specifications of the vehicle may change at any point up to delivery , if you aren't happy with that you don't not need to accept the delivery and your deposit (if applicable) will be returned .

That would suggest before the end of March

It would, but I've got them to be more specific and it's 6-9 months.

It's the same with private sales. I wanted to order a new A35 as they didn't have the colour I wanted in stock, but was told I couldn't 'secure' the current deal and the price would be whatever Mercedes were offering at the time of delivery.

It seems a bizarre way of doing business to me. They only seem interested in pushing you into stock cars. I was spending around £50k but felt like I was choosing the colour of an iPhone in Carphone Warehouse.

Very bizarre, I've never encountered it before.

I wouldn't mind a stock car, but none are available that match the spec.

Business lease means consumer protections don't generally apply. So it is down to the terms you agree with the other party.

Well that stops it completely then.

I spoke to them yesterday and they did say they have had a similar offer running on older EVs and they've been running for 12 and 18 months and have no sign of being withdrawn, and whilst he couldn't guarantee the offer would still be in place at the time of delivery he would find it unusual if it wasn't. He did say that if I placed the order the deposit would be 100% refundable and should the price increase, change my mind, or find another car in the meantime I could cancel the order and get my deposit back.

I'm still not 100% sure what I'm going to do, I did really like the car however I'm not 100% sure. There were times when I didn't like the rear wheel steering and there wasn't as much room for my left leg as I'm used to. It wasn't cramped but didn't leave any room for manspreading. I think it's likely I'll get used to the rear wheel steering but when shelling out this kind of money, more than I'd ideally like to spend, I need to be 100% sold on it.

That bit I’d make sure I had in writing.

Surely if you sign for a car and they change the price at the point of delivery you just tell them to jog on. Not taking the car.

Sounds bloody daft to me.
