I did persevere and I'm sorry you've found yourself in this position.
All I would add to this is that your alcohol units per week will certainly be an issue for many Insurers.
Apologies for format but have tried to answer your questions below.

- Are there any insurers who ask more lenient questions (for example, only asking about the last 5-10 years of medical/depression/alcohol history)?

I would start with calling specialist brokers - I have used Life Search in the past.Obviously you will have to be 100% honest in your replies to whatever they ask.

- Have I’ve burned my bridges with the insurer who turned me down?

Maybe maybe not but I would not fixate on this -call Life Search or whomever you choose.

- Do I need to declare this refusal when applying for another policy?

Its not like Car Insurance but if you are asked then again be honest. Not being honest with Insurers is not the answer.

- Do I need to declare this when taking out car insurance when answering the “Ever had insurance cancelled, declined or refused” question?

No this has nothing to do with whatever questions a Car Insurer will ask you -that is specific to the Car insurance.

- Do insurers share details? So, for example, if I go to another insurer now I know the correct info, will they cross-check this with the first insurer and suspect fraud?

Again just be honest with the broker.
Perhaps don't talk away for ages as soon as they answer the phone though !

- Are there any good brokers you can recommend?

As above.

- What sort of loading on my premium would I be looking at for insurers who may cover me?

I think your issue may well be more of actually finding Insurers to quote.

Best of luck.

I can't get life cover due to chronic medical conditions (namely AS and crohn's). I periodically apply again for employment reasons and keep getting rejected. Interestingly, on my last application the rejection was due to the medical conditions plus alcohol consumption of 20 units a week (hardly a massive excess on the guidance of 14 units!).

Do you definitely need cover for your mortgage? I'm guessing that even if you do find cover that your premiums may be prohibitively expensive.

We’re a specialist broker so if anyone can help we probably can. Excessive alcohol consumption can be a straight decline from many insurers, so if you are dealing with a broker who has a limited panel then they will struggle.

You will need to declare being declined elsewhere but that won’t burn any bridges.

Drop me a pm and there is a form on our website you can fill out so we can go to all the insurers without actually applying which will save you lots of time and hassle.

In a nutshell I wouldn’t worry as it can probably be sorted.

I quoted 30 units when applying for income protection and had to get blood taken for Liver Function.

Most people understate their consumption, so if you quoted 60 units they may assume it’s even higher than that.
