Looking at a two week road trip around scotland this year. 5 adults and 3 dogs. We looked at motorhomes and they were either very expensive to hire or didnt take dogs. Also only two adults are likely to be staying in it overnight so a bit pointless

Somebody said to me why not buy a big 7 seater/4x4/mpv, use it for the trip and for the rest of the year and then just sell it ?

Seems like a 'possible;' idea so took a look around and there are very few BIG cars that will take this sort of load ( with the obvious luggage on a roof rack ) but I narrowed it down ( so far ) to..

Landrover discovery 3
Toyota Alphard
Honda Stepwagon

..and van such as

Mercedes Traveliner
Peugot Expert Tipee
Vauxhall Vivaro minibus

All of these are around for under £5k

I doubt we would do 5k in these all year

cheers

I suspect you'll need to go bigger than anticipated unless you want 3 x adults across the middle, which might get a bit restrictive depending on adult / car / dog dimensions. A Ford Galaxy is big and a "proper" 7 seater however time you add in dogs, luggage etc then might be a bit tight even at that so yes, I think I'd be looking at something van based to give a bit breathing space.

Vauxhall Vivaro - £3995
Mercedes-Benz Traveliner - £3900

Chrysler Voyager, will do the job perfectly and will sell easily afterwards.

The i800 is the one that stands out to me as the pick:

Galaxy Titanium X but it might be a bit small for your needs:

Yup. Mate had an Elgrand and loved it and did similar things to the OP for a couple of years and moved it on for more or less what he paid

Another vote for Elgrand. Very comfortable and quiet, loads of them available under budget.

Another vote for the Asian buses - elgrand, i800, estima, hiace, previa. Some of these will be Jap imports. Think the HiAce came with a V6! Always had a weird thing for Asian slide door people carriers after living in SE Asia, they are everywhere but never caught on here in Europe.

The European equivalent vans with bolted in seats (transporter, vito and the like) will most probably be even higher mileage ex-airport taxis at this price.

Does a Gen1 XC90 work or is it too small?

When we had child No.3 come along we bought a Discovery 3, the Discovery 4 that replaced it was a much better car and in my opinion is a do it all car although every time it went into a garage it used to cost at least £1k to lift the bonnet.... a good LR specialist is key.

Slightly left field choice but does a Skoda Yeti work, once again may be slightly small as only a 5 seater but with a good roof box may be an option, they also sell really well....

A Ford Tourneo would fit the bill. A few Mk7s and Mk8's are in budget. Won't be as luxurious but more spacious and practical. They are 9 seaters so should offer mountains of space.

Ssangyong Rodius is in budget. Hideous but fits your requirements.

I doubt very much whether an XC90 or Yeti would fit 4/5 adults and 3 dogs

Try the Ssangyong Turismo. It's far better looking than a Rodius. It's bigger than an Elgrand.

As an 'E51' owner, I would also agree. Silky smooth V6, 4x4 option (if that's a requirement), all the usual toys (inc. tri-zone climate), super reliable and lots of space although I would probably suggest removing the middle seat in the middle row to free up space, as it's not suitable for adult on a long journey, instead using one of the rear most seats for adult #5.

Do factor in 18-23mpg though, which if you opt for the 3.5 V6 wants to be run on Super as a minimum, but ideally 99.

Still looking..

Heard some good things about the Elgrand and Alphard but also some expensive maintenance and fuel bills

I'm leaning more now to maybe a van type car as three dogs take up quite a lot of room !

I'd buy a Ford Transit custom but they are so expensive even used

Any alternatives to maybe a transit custom ?

Vauxhall Vivaro is much cheaper than the Transit equivalent. Still think its worth looking at a Chrysler Voyager.

If your looking for something a bit smaller and less thirsty than the Elgrand/Alphard.

Enter the Honda stepwagon.

Had it almost 3 years now no issues apart from a weeping power steering hose.

Bombproof k20 petrol engine.

Plenty of online resources for parts and information.
