Hi guys,
I’m currently driving a 2013 A4 avant 2.0 to which I’ve owned for almost 4 years and I’ve had almost zero issues with it. It was a sensible change from a Clio 182 and a Megane 265! It’s been my evening/weekend car for that time as I’ve always had a company car to use in that time. I’ve recently changed jobs and now have to use my car for work at 45p per mile. I’m doing between 1-200 miles per week with the weekend use on top. We recently got a dog and all of the accessories that go with it blah blah blah. I’m thinking of changing from the Audi to something bigger. I’ve always had the dream to own a Porsche in some capacity and the Cayenne has taken my fancy. I’ll probably have about 8-9k out of the Audi if I sell and can finance up to around 17-18k. Am I dreaming a bit big thinking I can run a V6 to cayenne on a fairly average salary? I have looked at the V8 as the tax and insurance isn’t much different but for that money it’ll be a leggy low spec one. Any advice or general man maths to help sway me would be greatly received! Thanks!

In the grand scheme of things 200-250miles a week isn’t a lot.

I have no specific knowledge on the Cayenne so hopefully those who do we follow me.

Two things I’d say is:
Buy on condition and full service history is a must.
Do you have access to a good independent specialist mechanic to significantly reduce any costs.

I owned an early (2003) Cayenne S for about 10 years (2013 to 2023, so it was already 10 years old when I bought it). It was a car I bought for a specific purpose, and intended to sell after 6 months - but it was so much better than I expected, I kept it for much longer. Even then, I only sold it because I rarely used it and by bad planning all 3 of my cars needed taxing in the same month. Faced with a ~£1,500 road tax bill - one of them had to go!

Mine is much older than you would be buying - and I didn't do high miles in it (I took it from about 82k to around 115k in 10 years) - but it was very reliable. I neglected it completely (it got an oil and filter change every few years, and that's it) - and it still had virtually no problems.

As with the Macan , transfer case has it been swapped out and warranty extended(likely expired at this price point) or have the fluids been upgraded , check for a shunting at low speeds when up to temperature

I ran a gen 2 Cayenne V6 PHEV under warranty and it had quite a few warranty repairs for a couple of electrical faults as well as the gearbox. Reading around electrical issues are not uncommon so do make sure absolutely everything is working properly when you check out a possible purchase.

The reality is that real world the running costs between the V8 & V6 is very small real world.

Hi,

We've owned a 2014 facelift V8S diesel for the last 5 years without fault. They're a fantastic car and running costs are really reasonable. We use ours around town and when I jumped into it the other day I noticed the average was 35mpg which for a 4.2V8 is astonishing.

Transfer cases are a consideration, I've always just changed the fluid annually which takes about 15minutes (air suspension at the highest setting and slide under - job done). In doing so we've never had any issues.

Other than that its just normal servicing. Tax is cheap so i really can't see a case for the 3.0V6, the V8 is so much more for hardly any additional running costs.

I think the OP was referring to a V8 petrol.

The tax alone would put me off the petrol unfortunately!

I looked at that one! Lovely spec and just before the facelift. There’s a V8 D for a little bit more that I like as well, with the burmister and two tone leather. I need to find one to test as I’ve never even sat in one! Would rather avoid the 30 calls a day from salesmen though 😂

The V8d is the pick.

After lots of window shopping and hunting around I’ve managed to sell the Audi and I’m picking up a 2013 V8D with 87k on the clock on Wednesday. Has had warranty until now and has had the common issues fixed. No record of transfer case but it drives perfectly and pulls like a train. It’s also got the optional air suspension which is nice to have with the pan roof which has had the drain mod done! Really looking forward to getting my hands on it. Needs a good clean and machine polish but it’s pretty tidy for its age!

I ran my 2008 Cayenne S V8 until 2022 and did over 325,0000km including 50,000 towin a trailer. It is still in the neighborhood with 360 on it now. Original major components apart from A/C which needed replacement and camshaft lifters at 225,000.
My current 2022 GTS V8 has 40,000 km and zero problems.

So we had newer cars and sold a couple in COVID, the mileage was creeping and it was a good time to sell. So I went to BCA auctions to get a stop gap car in 2020, coming towards the end of the auction I panic purchased a 2010 958 2nd Gen 3.0d. It had 99k on the clock and was ok condition.

Fast forward to 2025 and we still have it, it is now on 210000 miles and has had a few minor niggles but nothing major. Wear and tear items as you would expect. The time has come to replace it and I think it will be another cayenne! 3.6 GTS or 4.2Ds in the facelift with low miles so that I can use it for the next 5 years... You will not go wrong as a family car.
