Whilst I don't disagree with much of it 5.5 years is longer than many get for death by dangerous driving, and a lifetime ban as he hadn't redone his extended test from a previous conviction makes you wonder how Katie Price gets away with it over and over.

No excuses for the driver, but, it would not have happened if the woman had been on the pavement instead of wandering into the road without looking.

Or if she’d stayed at home. Or never been born.

People actually read/click on the s*n?
That’s equally as shocking.

I'm not clicking that link but I hope lifetime driving bans are more common. Some people don't deserve to drive. Repeated drink drivers, for example. People who have hit totting up bans repeatedly. They clearly don't respect their licence or the roads so take it away.

I would suggest that's how a large percentage of people get themselves run over. Had the driver not been a scroat driving without a licence, not speeding and not left the scene, there is every chance little blame if any would have been attached to them

Does kinda sound like you're making a little bit of an excuse for the driver. Lots of people get run over on pavements too btw.

5.5yrs isn't long at all but I'm glad to see a life time ban from driving, we need many more of those imo. Including getting rid of mitigating circs for people with over 12 points. Make the roads quieter for those of us who actually take care driving.

Driver sounds like an absolutely cowardly scumbag, hope he enjoys prison.

Quite

A pretty puerile comment, but hey this is Pistonheads!

After all that the s*n has done, you still think it’s a decent thing to do? Wow.

I don’t think many people actually care what The Sun has done or not done IMO.

The speeding is surely the crucial factor here? The woman would have been ‘wandering’ with a reasonable expectation that any traffic would be doing 30mph or less; it’s not surprising she made the wrong decision in stepping out.

Good. Hopefully we’ll see more of the same for the likes of him.

Sadly I don't think a lifetime ban will have any affect given he was already driving without a licence from a previous ban. When he gets out of prison he'll just start driving illegally again, and the whole cycle will continue.

Many people do care, and that’s fact, not opinion. For example, try to buy a copy of that piece of s**t in Liverpool.

This, ive never understood banning people for these sort of things,he was in effect a banned driver already, another ban isnt going to stop him.

Absolutely. Those who ignore the law will (and do) continue to break the law. Insurance? - don't need it. Licence? - optional. Legit vehicle? - don't make me laugh. Get caught? - rinse and repeat.

Another approach is needed, but given the state of the UK jail system, I'm not sure what.

Tagged and allowed to be at home and place of work at agreed times only.
Recalled to prison for contravention and if caught driving.

If he applied for a driving licence the day he got out of prison and the DVLA said "sure, no problem" would you be happy?

If not, that's why he's banned.
