Steering Rack - Alternative???

Hello,

Posting on behalf of a good friend who has suffered another steering rack failure - 3rd in 80,000 miles and instead of just paying full TVR money, is there an alternative source for the Chimaera rack?

Apologies if this has been asked before, I'm not a TVR owner so am running blind over here :-)

Three racks in 80K??? Sounds like a lot of racks!

the steering rack is specifically a TVR part - looks like there's no alternative.

It will be made by someone. There is only about three big makers of racks in the UK. Off the top of my head I believe the TVR Chim one is made by a company near haverhill, but can't for the life of me remember the company name. I'll post it if i remember. You would be better off getting the existing one reconditioned. Should not cost more that around £100

Depending on how buggered it is, talk to John at 3 J's in Perivale -- all he does is power steering and racks and could probably rebuild yours (with the right replacement parts).

When he did mine he spoke about some company that TWR bought that used to build the racks for old RR's and SD1's - he thought the Chim one looked similiar and so made by them.
