Odd car tax situation
Discussion
Purchased a used car privately from a friend.
Transferred ownership online and I used the green slip to tax it - again online.
I set up payment for the rfl in the form of a direct debit.
Web message says all is good - will take first payment then subsequent monthly installments.
Get a letter a few days later saying my bank refused the DD and I must use the V5 to tax online in full payment. OK no prob.
The thing is according to the DVLA online checker its showing as taxed despite no payments being taken.
I went to tax it online via the V5 as the letter demanded and it states it's already taxed and continuing may result in paying twice.
I've checked my bank statements and no payments were taken, not even the initial one from when I first set up the DD
So, is it a glitch in the system and I should sit tight and keep checking online as to the tax status?

Has your mate still got it ‘taxed’?
That's my thought. Once upon a time the tax moved with car. Simples. Now when you sell a car you're supposed to reclaim any unused VED, and the buyer starts from fresh. And the VED make another 15% on the deal because they only refund whole months. The 'system' can be rotten with delays.
It may show the car as taxed when you apply for the DD, then some time later void that when the DD fails.
Why does your bank not allow a DD?
It sounds like an odd 'the OP is broke' situation and his bank won't honour his DD promises.
If you just pay it wit a credit card, it's paid, then you only have a two-way problem with Barclaycard, not a three-way problem between you, Swine-sea and your bank.
Most people, a direct debit just works.

I think it can take almost 2 months to take the initial payment depending on when in the month you start. I bet you have done everything right and will see the payment leave in due course.
Even with the OP's back bouncing the DD payment? No Idea why my account has disallowed the DD
Certainly not broke haha.
The email contained the following 'Your bank has told us that we cannot setup your Direct Debit as your bank or building society account does not accept Direct Debits.'
Anyway I'll wait for the system to catch up and pay in full.

Daft question but you are using a current account not a savings account aren't you?I only ask because IIRC many savings accounts don't allow DDs.
