Sheffield the beer scene and surrounding area

Hi Yorkshire folk and anyone with knowledge.

I'm travelling up to Sheffield in a couple of weeks for the Camra winter beer festival.
The festival is actually in Rochdale at the Magna Science centre.

I'm staying in Sheffield which is fairly close.

Firstly what's Sheffield like for newbies and generally getting about?
What are the best areas for good real ale?
Pub recommendations etc
how easy to get to Rochdale day of Festival.. I'm staying at the Premier Inn Angel st.

are Ubers buses Trains or trams the best bet.

Bit of a trek otherwise!

Sheffield has probably one of the best beer 'scenes' in the north, in fact in the UK!

Can't go wrong with following this trail

Or in town there's the Bath Hotel, Washington, Sheffield Tap (part of the railway station), Rutland Arms and Lord Nelson (Fannys).

There's a tram to Meadowhall and then bus to Magna.

If there's a few of you you could always share an Uber.

If it's a late one then Uber back would be easiest.

Rochdale is a long way from Sheffield, I'm assuming it's Rotherham that you'll be going to instead?

X3 bus is your best bet, drops off outside Magna.

For real ale in Sheffield head the the Kelham Island area

Shakespear on Gibraltar St
Riverside - Mowbray St
Fat cat
Kelham Island Tavern
The Ship (now sadly closed I hear)
Wellington
Check opening times if it’s a day session your doing

Fagans on Broad Lane (part owned by Arctic Monkeys) is a brilliant little (tiny) pub maybe 15 min walk from there which would be good as your last pub (not much else near there) before heading across the road to the excellent Butlers Indian restaurant

I drink in these places fairly often and am having a day session there in a few weeks, followed of course by a Butlers curry.

Around the Kelham Island area are also a mix of more trendy new bars, the type housed in old factories etc which could present a nice mix depending on what you want, and there’s also Cutlery Works which has bars and food counters under one roof, everyone sits big long tables and you get a buzzer when your foods ready to collect

Can you still get ‘Roger and Out’ in Sheffield, I can (just about) remember drinking it in the 90’s on a night out there.

I found my certificate for that a little while back!

Only sold in 1/3 pints, award for managing 3. It was pretty grotty stuff.

No, don't think they sell it now, though the Frog & Parrot pub is still there.

They used to have a glass screen in the floor that you could stand on and look down into the brewery, or at least where they stored barrels, and I remember back in the late 80's when they had a parrot in a cage.

You got a certificate for each 3rd pint glass purchased, with each following certificate having text more blurred than the previous

Salt is another decent bar in Kelham Island, not particularly a real ale pub but nice to sit out in on a nice day, and in-between other bars the OP might be heading for.

On the outskirts is the excellent The Gardners Rest, sandwiched between Cutlery Works and Heist bar (which I'm not keen on as its too new and modern). In fact when I last spoke with the landlord of the Gardeners he said they had started having security on the door at weekends to keep out the Saturday night crowds who visit the trendier bars





and its quirky beer garden

I'm a big fan of Kelham Island but it's a very mixed bag. The Gardners Rest is probably my least favourite as it smells like one big toilet and the 'beer garden' is like a junk yard.

Domo is a good place for food to soak it all up at the end...

more a beards and 2/3rds of hazy iPa/ pale ale or, have you got madri ? type places.

Surprised at the love for Bulters, awful place. If down that end for a curry Seven Spices is at the bottom of the road.

All the good places listed above though if you like proper pubs.

I fear you may end up disappointed with the festival at Magna, it doesn't bode to be a good one sadly.

May I suggest you skip all the Sheffield nonsense, hop on a train to Chesterfield and do the Brampton Mile instead? A cracking run of boozers with a wide variety of real ales on.
