There is a certain segment of the population out there who thinks guys who are "over the hill" buy a porsche as an extension of their ........well you know.

In any case, the 911 series is a good car, yes, it's a good one, but the 928 drivers just have a larger, how shall we say, "zest" for life.

There are certain things that you just can NOT do in a 911, that you can do in a 928.

Maybe this is why the Boxster and 911 guys are reluctant to wave at a 928?? lol

I once saw a TG test on estate cars where they filled the boot with coloured balls from a ball pit (I'm sure you can guess where this is going...).

Maybe someone should set up a test where the boots of a few models of Porsche are filled with dodgy birds in claret spandex - not sure whether you should be applauded for the most or the least though

Come one bumcrack, there's no requirement to hold conversations with them! A well managed liaison, you might never even know that they're chavs (or the american version at least).....

Apropos of not much some anecdotes about a 928!
I bought a second hand 928S years ago as a young man, had an awful lot of fun with it but it was basically a money pit. I left it sitting for about five years and finally decided to sell it, a friend of mine wanted it so I said "1800 quid to you but it'll eat money, so don't say you weren't warned!".
So, over the last 2 years it's eaten his money, I think he only had her on the road once. After leaving it standing for the last year he decided to sell, put her up for 1500 quid. A guy turned up this weekend to have a look. My mate hasn't got around to checking her over properly and finds that the oil and water are both dry, he tops them up and the potential customer stands looking at the engine while my mate starts her up. She roars into life but all the seals and gaskets have rotted and the poor guy is covered in oil and water! Eventually the deal is done for 350 quid!

During my ownership of the car I had to get a complete respray. I went to a very reputable shop and they did a great job for 4 grand, matching the colour perfectly. I picked her up, made some small talk, thanked the bloke for a good job and drove home. As I was parking on the drive I suddenly realised I'd lost my jacket, I panicked a bit because it had my keys and wallet in it. Jumped out and started sorting through my pockets when I hear a crash. Turn around and I'd left the handbrake off. The car has rolled around the corner of my drive and crashed into the house! I went back to the paint shop and said "Do you have any of my colour left?" He goes "Yeah, why, did we miss a bit?" I said "Perhaps you should take a look" Never forget the look on his face :-) Had to have the body work repaired and another whole respray, easy to laugh now but not funny at all at the time.

A fantastic car though. I drive a 997S now but everytime I see a good condition 928 I just go all silly, I would realy love to own one for those summer Sunday mornings.

Well my 928 S4 was relatively well behaved.
Quite a solid car, very good handling for its size. I sold it last year and saw the current owner only a few weeks ago and he is very happy with the car.

I went through a clutch, had to replace the clutch master cylinder, had to replace the cam belt twice along with the water pump once, changed all the ignition leads and distributors and had to have the tanks repaired on the radiator.
These are to be expected on a car that was a 1987 model, and I owned it for 6 years.
To counter the maintainance costs the car depreciated only about £2000 in those years!

It was a great car, but I was never really passionate about it and I don't really miss it.

I'm in the process of possibly deciding on a long distance leisurely cruiser, and the 928 could come up on my list as well as a BMW m635 CSi, but I think this time I'll go toward the BMW (despite potentially hefty bills). It has an agressive styling and excites me infinitely more!
The worst aspects of the 928- is the anodyne and boring exhaust note with stock system (change it and it's another story though- as I did), its appetite for rear tyres-much worse than a 911-, clunky long travel gear change and it's lack of performance "Feel" despite being a quick car.
I attribute this last aspect perhaps to the abundance of too much low speed torque!

How bad are we talking? Having been thoroughly unimpressed by a 550 on Saturday i think a 928 may be on my shortlist (an 87/88/89 S4 or GT) for £6k instead of £60k! Or an E30 M3...

Bear in mind my 993 uses a pair of rears every 6000 miles...

Bear in mind I drive with considerable restraint- I was regularly achieving 25-29 mpg from my 928 S4- long distance. Well I got about 4500-6000 miles from a set of Conti Sport contacts, and close to , say 8000 miles from harder less grippy Kuhmos.

My 993 tt will easily get over 10,000 miles from a set of rears, and that's with decent BridgeStone Potenza SO2s!

I got 6000 miles on Falken FK451 in 245/45/16 size. That includes around 60 laps of the Ring, where I regularly do mid 8 min BTG... Not bad for a car designed in 1972...

On another note - I used to own a series of BMWs, including a E24 635CSi Manual... I have also driven the ///M version of the 6-er on many a trips in Germany...

Rex, I am sorry, but the E24, however good it may be in the looks department cannot hold a candle to the 928 overall. The M30B35 is good, but it ain't no match for the V8. The ///M version of the engine is good, but still it does not excite me. The Getrag unit is an equally notchy gearbox. The ATE brakes are pants compared to the brembos on the Porsche. The overall handling is cr*p in comparison and it lacks the space ship coolness of the interior...

P.S. Would still love a good E24 M6, if I was not living in London

P.S.1. Of course I am biased

No need to appologise
I agree that the 928 is functionally a better car, the brakes are better (although I don't agree about the gear change) and some call the handling cr*p compared to the sublime and well mannered handling of the 928. However I think the handling is fun!
