2012 Fiat 500c Numberplate Lights

A message appeared on the dashboard saying the numberplate lights were not working. So I purchased new bulbs and fitted them. The old ones looked black and blown.
The message is still on and the bulbs are not lighting up.
Any suggestions?

The wiring from the main bodywork to the hatch? The wires often break up because of the constant opening. Is the heated screen working?

Thanks. It is a convertible, so the heated rear window is not part of the boot hatch. Will look at the wires and see if there is anything obvious.
