Police scamera vans now working at night
Discussion
I'd seen these a couple of times in the Autumn on my way back from work around Reading/Sonning/Bracknell but saw one again tonight at 6.10pm. It was dark and as usual with these scumbags their camera was hard to spot (impossible in the dark from the front) and facing cars driving along a road with barely any safety issues.
Luckily I came off the roundabout and spotted them first but night time scamera (and I don't mean safety/camera, I mean cameras scamming drivers) is a seemingly new thing for us to get f
ked over by. What a horrible bunch of people they are.
Somehow sitting outside the two schools and multiple residential roads I also drive through was clearly unimportant.

18.10 is evening, not night. In fact, in most cities it's still rush hour. What's the problem with that?Luckily I came off the roundabout and spotted them first but night time scamera (and I don't mean safety/camera, I mean cameras scamming drivers) is a seemingly new thing for us to get f

You do realise that they will go to a number of different areas. Luckily I came off the roundabout and spotted them first but night time scamera (and I don't mean safety/camera, I mean cameras scamming drivers) is a seemingly new thing for us to get f

We go to collision sites and areas that people have complained about.
Maybe people have complained about speeders down that road and they are doing something about it.
What's the point of going to the same places over and over...better to mix it up and make people think there could be a camera nearby...I'll keep an eye on my speed.
One day you’ll grow up OP

No one's being scammed though are they. Luckily I came off the roundabout and spotted them first but night time scamera (and I don't mean safety/camera, I mean cameras scamming drivers) is a seemingly new thing for us to get f

You know the limit, you know how fast you should be driving, view it as an optional tax that's very easily avoidable rather than nonsensical rants on the internet about people being scammed.
It's like a shop lifter quimming about being caught nicking something.

And one day it’ll be your turn to pay the tax for doing marginally over a limit that is far too low, probably not legally signposted and changed repeatedly prior to the scam van just to catch you out. Absolute

If your observation is that poor what else aren’t you seeing?

If you had been done by a scam van pointing at a 30 sign as you left a 50mph dual carriageway, literally the most profitable place to put it, rather than near the accident black-spot 2 miles up the road which is why the scam van was there in the first place, you would possibly have some sympathy
Nobody is ever not guilty of speeding in these cases, but occasionally the way they are stationed and located is very much about manufacturing maximum profit, not necessarily just about making sure people slow around accident black spots, which is the ONLY reason they are allowed to be put somewhere anyway, or was.

It’s the places these are placed that most people have beef about. As has been said if they were placed near schools etc no one would ever complain. But they’re always on good stretches of road, and just as a limit drops to a 30. Yes we should be doing 30 at that point but most people just ease off and so get caught.
I know of a few where I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of accidents, wide 2 lane either side road big central reservation and a cemetery on one side see them there often.
We just have to understand motorists give a lot of money and when anyone’s needing extra money they look to motorists.
A lot of money is spent on detecting any infringement possible, just wish they’d spend as much clearing up crime.

In rural Warwickshire, where blanket 50mph limits are in place on previously 60mph roads for no reason whatsoever, the preferred camera van locations are towards the end of long straights. By the time you’ve exited the corner onto the straight it’s too late and you’re done by their laser and telephoto lens.
No accident blackspots, difficult junctions, schools, old folks homes for miles in either direction.

Or if the same effort spent monitoring motorists for breaking the law was also spent catching rapists, shop lifters, car thief’s…
Interestingly, more likely to be killed or seriously hurt in a collision than murdered/life changing/life threatening injuries from something else. Geffg said:

Geff, you are not alone in this train of thought. Sadly people don't see it, and, this forum is populated with active police. They are picking low hanging fruit and its been happening for many years. Dress it up all you like, its not ok. Where I live, they have been taking the piss so much they have had to respond (with a bullsI know of a few where I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of accidents, wide 2 lane either side road big central reservation and a cemetery on one side see them there often.

This is the most tiresome and daft thing that is repeated about speed cameras. I know of a few where I don’t think I’ve ever seen or heard of accidents, wide 2 lane either side road big central reservation and a cemetery on one side see them there often.

What do you do when you drive past a school?
Is it to zoom past at the fastest speed you would like or do you take some care? I suspect the latter or you would not have suggested putting the speed camera there, daft as it is.
Site them next to schools and it is unlikely there will be many speeding, or have I missed the point of the daft suggestion that areas near schools deserve the best care to be taken by even the most keen of drivers.
These devices are speed cameras, hence they are located where drivers are likely to use excess speed. Learn where these are and take care not to become a victim of the speed camera. Your post does suggest that you know where they are likely to be so why do you think they are difficult to avoid?
It ain't difficult, it's not rocket science, however your logic and that of many others who want speed cameras near schools and hospitals indicates that you fire no rockets. Why hospitals? I have never seen that as a scene of likely dangers on the roads.
