Me and a mate are going to tekno classica in Essen in April. As well as a few days there, and an obligatory day at the ring. We plan to allow a day to seek 200mph on the Autobahn.

We’ve a modified CL55AMG, with over 600 ponies and the gearing and fresh top dollar tyres to do it. Whether it will or won’t will be a close thing.

We need to do this as safely as possible.

With some German mates we’ve ID’d the e31 north of Essen, it’s long straight, with lower levels of traffic.
Not looking to do this at night, as whilst it might seem a better time, there’s the risk of animals jumping out, and no headlights at that speed will help.
We plan to drive the e31 at sensible speeds to find a section between a few bridges / junctions that contain no compressions or issues in the road. Turn around and do the other side of the road. Then gradually build up the speed along this chosen section. Only if there’s a clear run and no traffic on the lane inside of us will we attempt building up the speed to this level.

Has anyone else done this method, tried it, succeeded/ failed etc.. just looking for advice, tips and any prior knowledge on the topic.

There must be favourite places, Not been that fast but remember being driven to some karting place doing about 150 in the Tuscan, serious drinking the night before after a TVR Zolder event meant I was struggling to keep my eyes open so went along as a passenger in my car. @James Meldrum.

Like it. A few brakists’ heads will be imploding at the very thought.

Am sure I recall Harry Metcalfe doing an autobahn run in his P8. Can’t remember what he eventually got it up to offhand but can’t have been too far off 200.

I can say, from experience, if you're trying to max out on the autobahn, you're in for a shock. Stuff happens incredibly quickly at 150mph, and all the other traffic doesn't know a) what you're attempting and b) that you're not experienced at it.

I chickened out at a little below 160, and have zero desire to do it again on a public road.

How will you ensure no traffic will appear on the inside lane, short of closing an entire section?

From memory this only has 2 lanes - it'll just take a dozing LKW driver to go for an overtake somewhere ahead of you as you're travelling at literally 4x his speed and something awful would ensue.

There are also quite a few other factors that can take you by surprise which a British driving test doesn't train for.
So, It's a No from me.
But I believe there are controlled events out there for this kind of thing.

Definitely keep your lights on even in daytime. You want people to see your car from as far away as possible and silver tends to blend in to the background.

Also, I'm not sure what the police will think if you've folded mirrors.

Quality tyres are good, but make sure brakes, brake fluid etc. are in top condition.

Just remember that at 200 mph you have twice the kinetic energy as you have at 141 mph, and four times the kinetic energy as you have at 100 mph.
If you don’t understand kinetic energy, don’t try these sorts of speeds.
If you DO understand kinetic energy, you will think again.

We’ve done terminal velocity events, but reality is. There’s not enough runway.

The sun rises at 6:40 in Essen on Sunday 13th April. Get up an hour before and get out, that’d be the best time to attempt it.

There's more runway than there is unobstructed autobahn.

ETA: If we could get a CL63 to over 200mph at V Max, then you can get your 600hp CL500 there too.

Seems about as sensible a way to try as there is. The single most important element is to ensure you don't involve anyone else and as such be 100% happy to back out or not try if the conditions aren't correct. Absolutely no downside to choosing to fail. And if you aren't the driver then you better be 100% confident that the person who is will be an adult.

Just get a bike. Few years ago, I managed 174mph on my ZX12 on the way to work one morning just for a laugh.
