Is there any human interaction with speed camera fines?
Discussion
Just curious to know how automated the multitude of speed cameras are or whether there is any human input along the line.
When the cameras detect a vehicle speeding they produce (at least) 2 pictures taken a certain time apart. We've all seen those photos on numerous PH threads - but what happens to the photos after they have been taken? Obviously the photos have to link to the DVLA database so as they know where to send the fine, but does a human look at the pictures first to check the systems working correctly? or to check the number plate has been read correctly? or to check that the speed and the speed limit are recorded correctly? or is this all done automatically?
Once linked to the registered keeper's contact details, again is any of this checked manually or automatically before the fine is sent out?
Or is the whole system just left to it's own devices and assumed to always work perfectly, unless someone complains?
So is there anybody out there that knows how the system works, or at least how it should work?
Following on from a heated debate in the pub last night I have a pint resting on the outcome of this so any insider knowledge (as long as it agrees with me!!) would be greatly appreciated!

I don't know for sure, but I think there must be some human element, to spot non-'car derived vans' doing more than 60 on DCs.
That could be done by comparing speed to V5 details.
There will be admin involved for sure, usually simply a case of making sure a picture is usable and visible then I would guess the rest is automated. I would think by now a lot of this is automated, I would imagine some method of ID'ing car despite its plates being obscured or dark, or dirty must also be man controlled.
Obviously when it comes to disputes, then not only are admin involved but also,, usually ex police who understand the law and can use the systems necessary to start building cases.

I was going down the motorway yesterday in a 50 mile hour signed bit, and had the cruise control set at 53 mile hour. All the traffic around me was doing pretty much identical speeds.
As I was approaching a camera, it flashed somebody ahead of me.
I had an recorded traffic and couldn’t see anybody travelling quicker than everybody else that might of triggered it.
Obviously, I dropped it to below 50 before I passed the camera, but I was really surprised.

There is human input always.Yellow Lizud said:

Some only produce one image not 2, either way a human observes and decides.Yellow Lizud said:

The photograph doesn’t link to the DVLA, the plate is read first then the plate read is used. Some areas may use an ANPR system to read the images. This is not part of any approved enforcement device so may result in some misreads if the read by ANPR is not verified. No. But if ANPR reading of images is not verified then there will be errors in identification. ANPR is far from being faultless. Only parking companies would claim that ANPR is faultless I would say.Yellow Lizud said:

There is always a degree of human interaction before a decision is made on enforcement evidence. Some areas may rely on some automatic registration plate read, others will check and verify that read.Following on from a heated debate in the pub last night I have a pint resting on the outcome of this so any insider knowledge (as long as it agrees with me!!) would be greatly appreciated!
Whether you consider I know anything about this is up to you. Choose from the various answers above amp pick out the ones you want. I am sure there will be many answers to come that oppose these.
Good luck with your bet. Do let everyone know how you got on and what side you were on while in the pub.
There are some enforcement devices that do an automatic Verification without a human interaction and which do not involve the checking of images.

Aren't they average speed cameras? As I was approaching a camera, it flashed somebody ahead of me.
