We have a website or a small construction company, and I am looking to improve the SEO rankings. Can anyone recommend a decent agency or individual to help please?

Can you PM me your website address.

There's always companies willing to sell you SEO services, but for many small businesses SEO could at best be a waste of money. And cheap SEO can often make things worse.

Let me take a look and I can see whether it's the route you should be taking right now or if there's more effective (and most importantly, cost effective), alternatives.

100% this - Be extremely careful about who you engage with, anyone promising quick wins/results should be avoided.

It's a long process to make an real impact that requires patience, and commitment from both sides. Aside from basic best practises (which should have been done when the site was first built), to make a real impact anything less than 12 months is a waste of resource IME.

We don't provide dedicated SEO (we're a creative design & development agency) but I can happily point you in the direction of a few third-party agencies some of our clients use who might be worth chatting with if you can PM me your site, and budget expectations.

Depending on budget and I’ll assume low I’d See if the local uni have a SEO / marketing course and get a student in.
You may get more enquiries from social media showing your projects etc - it’s very easy to pump cash out the business on lead gen marketing so think it through carefully.

A prime example that I saw this morning of how things can easily go wrong.

Looking through a website where an overseas SEO has tried to improve the site's local search results.

The SEO, being somewhat unfamiliar with both UK geography and precision spelling, has mistakenly targeted a town 200 miles away. Oops.

I set up a small business in 2010 using a third party company to develop the site which was part catalogue and part ecommerce.

I researched the key factors that affected SEO at that time, becoming fairly knowledgeable on the subject. It took many months of keyword research etc, but the website rose to the top three for many key word searches. It was a fairly niche product but in that niche I was mixing it up with pages from Ikea, Wickes, B&Q selling similar products. Even today, three years after selling the business, I see that it is still at number one in Google for the main search term (though it has fallen for the second search term making me think the buyers have taken their eye off the SEO ball)..

I had forays with third party companies during the 12 years or so that I owned the business but never found this to be particularly successful. If the website is important, or even crucial, to your business success, why put SEO in the hands of third parties?

Almost daily, when tweaking products, or making small changes to copy, I had SEO in mind and it was a very successful strategy. You know what you are selling and your customer base better than a third party will ever do so. It is also fun and rewarding.

For a small company looking to increase its online visibility, an agency experienced in digital marketing for specific niches can make a real difference. I came across an interesting page from this SEO agency about SEO strategies applied in the medical field, but the principles can be adapted for construction as well. It s not just about technical optimization, but also about content that builds trust.
Check it out here: https://fortressgrowth.com/digital-marketing-for-p...

I would suggest Pearl Lemon. They're an SEO agency based in the UK and cater to niche companies. But depending on your budget and goal, you might want to look into PPC along with SEO. An agency that can do both will help you achieve quicker results and long-term value. So keep your options open when looking to improve rankings.
