What happens if you pass your pre-set mileage limit on your insurance - any experiences.

I am not sure how many insurers actually verify the mileage at the beginning of the policy; I suppose they must rely on honesty from god fearing folk like vic. That said, if you crashed and the MoT or service showed excessive mileage within a year... hmmm.

It was the "pro rata" bit that I was after. I agree, there is no point in passing the limit without informing the insurance company. That would give the loss adjuster a field day in case of an accident.

I recently breached my limit and spoke to the insurers and they said that the car wouldn't be insured at all unless I purchased extra miles from them.

To their credit though they managed to get me an extra 1,000 miles for half of their original quote of £200 so hats off.

Norton Heritage my insurer said to me, "if you are going to breach your limit, phone us and we'll add the pro rata fee acording to how long is left on teh current policy etc"

so do it in advance I say.

I am with Tesco and they say "estimated annual mileage."

I have 12,000 per year. Likely to be over by about 1000 so I will call them and extend.

GOLDEN rule here is NEVER do more miles than you tell them. Be assured they will NOT be paying out if you do.

Experience has taught me that you ALWAYS err on the side of caution with this one............
