I saw this on a different forum so I thought I'd pass it on.

Channel 4 is to launch a major new competition format show to spotlight the country’s undiscovered brainboxes.

It is estimated that there are thousands of people in the UK with the brains of a genius, from all walks of life and backgrounds – who don’t even know it. Secret Genius will see Alan Carr and Susie Dent test Britain’s brainpower like never before to uncover the country’s most gifted and unsung minds.

It is quite hard to define what one means with the word “genius”. There are people with unique mental skills eg amazing memories but I would put people into the genius category only if they have had a significant impact on a particular field eg Newton or Einstein. Therefore I doubt they are going to uncover any geniuses. I am sure there are plenty of bright people who fell through the cracks at school and so don’t have qualifications in line with their potential.

What a genius actually is is an interesting question.

I'm sure there are many people who've transformed the world who weren't actually very clever, but they saw one thing others didn't.

And there'll be a lot of hyper intelligent beings who spent their lives sat on a sofa drinking Irn Bru until they expired.

I've met two geniuses in my life, one couldn't make tea to save his life and the other one has terrible taste in shirts!

One can listen to a very complicated piece of music they have never heard before ONCE, and then, an hour later transcribe it onto musical staves. The other designs cars with a pencil (drawing the inside of clutches etc at full size) and then gets them built and makes millions.

You can't be good at everything, and geniuses tend to lack in other areas.... tea and shirts for example. :0)

BTW, having a good memory and general knowledge is nothing to do with genius.

Oh dear, here we go,thousands of parents thrashing thier kids into absorbing the contents of encyclopedias again. Summer is cancelled.
All just in case google breaks down.
You may find the most intelligent person somewhere they have no electricity.

I think the case of Ruth Lawrence is interesting. She was a child genius in maths, getting an undergraduate degree from Oxford at 13 and PHD at 17. Although she has become a professor of mathematics she doesn’t seem to be a leading mathematician and I don’t think has done anything particularly novel or special.

Alan Carr? Obviously they don't want an audience of people who do a lot of thinking.
