My belief is that the public own the highways and they have a right to move freely on the roads that they have paid for through taxes over the years.

This escalating council craze of closing roads, pop-up bus gates, and installing speed humps outside your house with their SUSTRANS collaborators would anger even the calmest traffic!!!

I expect you are all familiar with the details - I was just wondering if there are any action groups I can join to try and get my on-street parking back and stop the speed humps from appearing - I live in the South West - Frome to be precise - If anyone is interested in starting an action group - count me in - I did raise my concerns in their so-called 'consultation' but the MP is backing the scheme frown

Lancashire County Council put up signs saying, "Improving your highway."

Improving my highway usually involves reducing the speed limit and installing average speed cameras. I should be able to drive as fast as I like on my highway and charge everyone else a toll to use it.

I hate speed bumps with a passion, they really are awful for everyone

Driving my normal car - not great for suspension. Also leads to potholes forming more easily. Not great with parked cars either as negotiatimg the bumps means you can't line up to pass someone coming the other way

Pre-war classic - absolute nightmare, narrow track, limited suspension travel and damping makes it a dead slow job to negotiate them.

Cycling - again, bloody jarring, makes potholes appear quickly, the cushion type forces me to either go right in the gutter or right out to the centre. Also makes smooth overtakes by cars harder.

Bus - makes the windows rattle!

Residents - the noise of cars banging up and down them, braking, accelerating etc is awful, I'm lucky I don't live on a road with them now.

My road has quite a few inappropriately quick drivers, but speed bumps would be a nightmare. Lots of extra noise and road damage, while the meatheads in pickups and mums in SUVs will just hammer over them regardless

I researched before I wrote it

"Question: Who owns the UK roads. Answer: The simple answer is that the public own and run them. Roads exist for the use of the public and are maintained by various government bodies at public expense. Roads in Great Britain can be divided into two categories for this purpose: trunk roads and non-trunk roads. Trunk roads (see 2.6 What is a 'trunk road'?) are nationally important routes, which are maintained by the national highway authority of each country (for example, the Highways Agency in England). All other public roads are maintained by local authorities — usually a city or county council. Roads in Northern Ireland are all maintained by the Northern Ireland Roads Service."

I used to believe that the purpose of all these calming measures was to get traffic to go at less than 30mph when it was hard/impossible to impose speed limits of less than 30mph.

So, now there is the option of 20mph limits, there should be no need for measures that distract drivers, cause pollution, increase noise and damage vehicles.

I should be less optimistic!

We have one about 5 feet (if that) from a junction. So with the new 20 mph limit as well, you turn left into this from the main road with someone inches from your plate, expecting you to keep rolling left - but of course you have to slow down as the speed bump is so big and with you hitting it at an angle, it throws you high up.

I winch every time as I see the car behind panic braking due to my backside poking out (so to speak...)

I wrote to the council about it, but did not even get an acknowledgement.

I now put my hazards on when turning left into this turning.

I thought councils were moving away from the use of speed humps because drivers slowing down for them and accelerating after them increased vehicle emissions. That should be raised with your local council. Also, play the cycling safety argument.

I have a speed hump outside my house. When the bin lorry comes back down my cul-de-sac and hits it, it shakes the house down to the foundations. The council wants the speed humps and its employees driving its biggest, heaviest vehicles don't slow down for them.

What is the speed limit on your road?

Bad for catalytic converters too - mine cost well over 2000 GBP to replace - and if a tyre bursts - most cars these days, including mine, don't have spares and getting back home is quite a performance - I speak from experience.

These proposed humps are going near my front door - but that isn't the only reason I am against it - I stand with all those people who don't want their roads blocked off and are fed up of getting fined in Bristol for accidently going down bus lanes

Exactly, they have also imposed a new 20 mph limit - but that is not enough to get drivers to stop at a crossing about 200 yards down the street - personally, I always use the brakes to stop my car smile

What I should have said was the "on-street parking outside my house" - I don't need it myself because I rent a garage - but a lot of people around me do need it and use it - I want it back for them

Trouble is the public can't be trusted to drive sensibly.

The road I'm on is fairly wide for a residential road but people still blast down it at silly speeds despite their being a fair bit of pedestrian traffic. They only slow down when going past the school.

Is it because they respect the school? Of course not, it's because there are multiple speed humps.

Same idiots moan about being caught speeding by a static camera, surely if you can't spot a big yellow camera on a stick you probably shouldn't be driving.

I wrote to everyone in the Town Council, County Council, my MP, even SUSTRANS themselves, and got lots of replies but they were full of excuses - lots of people have written to them - the Frome carnival goes down the street and there is a fire station on the road - it's like trying to reason with an addict, who can't see the problems they are causing others smile Hence, I am looking for like-minded people to form a resistance smile

Yeh, I know, that does not help - but sometimes things are taken too far - according to my MP it is to encourage people to cycle and walk but I do a lot of that already - when these changes impact how people live and they just do not care about it - it is injust

Not in my area, the local council recently installed SEVENTY SIX speed humps on all the roads in the vicinity of the local shopping centre. In some places the humps are only 20m apart.

The other fun thing they do is install a massive speedhump that goes from curb to curb and anything from a couple to over ten metres long and is the same height as the curb with angles of approach so steep that anything over 10mph causes the car to scrape as it climbs on and then off again.
