i probably shouldn't make this post on an internet forum, but it seems to be quite a common mistake, not just a typo. the spelling is Lens, not Lense

http://www.answers.com/topic/lens-1?method=6

unless anyone knows differently?

Oh - here it is:

You see somebody found that lense is a possible correct use!

Historically the correct spelling is 'lens', however, the misspelling 'lense' has become so prevalent that even the OED now includes it as a legitimate alternative.

To that end, if one takes the OED as being definitive of usage (there is another debate about usage vs. 'legitimate'), then either is now acceptable...

"Lense" must be a Yank aberration. And Webster is the last place anyone should look for any authority on the English language I'm afraid. When I rule the world, I'll have his body exhumed and posthumously tried for crimes against humanity.
