Hi, we have a week booked in Sorrento and the. A hotel in Rome for a night. We have been told it was fairly easy to catch a train for this and Google directions appears to agree.

However on trying to actually book the train it won’t let me,I suspect this is because I cannot book more than 2 months in advance and we go in May. But also it is showing as an over 4hr journey time, whereas Google was suggesting around 2.5hrs.

Question is,

Am I doing something wrong to see the higher than expected journey time?

How bad would just driving be? We are staying close to the train station so doesn’t look too bad a drive, but I have heard horror stories about driving in Rome.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Trainline.com would suggest 4 hrs. Ah but it's bus to Napoli then trein to Roma.
You can get train to Napoli Garibaldi. Then Napoli Centrale to Roma. Maybe that's how you need to book it as separate trips. That looks a lot quicker. But doesn't come up on a direct search.

Decent prices. Stress free. Right into the CENTRE of Rome.

You'd be mad to drive.
3h 19m according to Google for the drive. Factor in parking and stress. Is it worth it. You are on holidays remember.

Are you using the Trenitalia app?

Wife and I have used trains in Italy extensively. We always research and book from the UK using Trenitalia's website:

https://www.trenitalia.com/en.html

You can search, book , pay for tickets and download them before heading off.

Regarding your difficulty finding appropriate train times from Sorrento to Rome, it is often the case with Italian train timetables that they are not available too far ahead. Try an earlier date to get an idea of the time then regularly go back until the dates you want are available. Note that you often need to insert the station names in Italian eg Firenze not Florence.

You don’t need to book from Sorrento. Just get the circumvesuviana train into Naples (it’s so cheap it may as well be free).
All you need to book is naples to Rome. We did this last year. Wasn’t much more to go business class on the train and you get bigger seats and a snack box.
I’ve never had a problem on an Italian train; it’s the one thing that Mussolini did that was vaguely Positive.

Agreed, they are usually (at least these days) meticulously clean, with onboard cleaners.

Brilliant the trenitalia site has worked combined with the use of the circumvesuviana train.

Thank you so much and yes I agree I really don’t fancy driving but we promised the lad we would take him to Rome as he is crazy about history.

Good to see you've got the right website. Once you're on there, the faster options will be shown.

Sorrento to Naples is probably the part of the journey where you have most choices - train/bus/taxi etc.

We used the train a lot for a Pisa - Florence - Rome trip and the trainline app was worth having.

Remember to scan your tickets on the platform just before you board the train.
