At 19 years old, my low-miles Cayman 987.1 S is in need of a new cat-back exhaust system. It required some patching to get through the last MoT. I’ve read worrying reports of 3rd-party exhausts droning at certain speeds, so has anyone fitted a cost-effective alternative to a genuine Porsche exhaust system that doesn’t have that problem?

Hey Mike, there is a plethora of after market systems (cat back, full system etc) out there, and you are correct; some are a victory of quantity over quality (ie a LOT of noise but not much pleasantness, and severe resonance). For my money (and me personally), the Carnewal approach has a great sound, very easy to live with, no issue re track day limits (comes in at 99 decibels at Goodwood), and is reasonably priced with the "send your old system back" approach (and always the option to drive to Belgium and have it fitted there. Others here will have other suggestions.

I've looked at Carnewal, but I honestly think that my old exhaust is so shot that it wouldn't work as an exchange part...

I replaced my (cracked) original exhaust with a resonated Milltek system. It is slightly louder than the standard system but thankfully doesn't drone. Not too expensive and pretty well made. Certainly worth a look.
