Was concentrating quite hard (due to dodgy weather and busy motorway) so I'm very clear on the sequence of events -

Going towards Thurrock on the M25 last night, so it's the older fixed grey box gantry cameras behind the active signs.

The signs were illuminated at a 60 limit and when I was still 200 yards away they cut off for a second and then illuminated at NSL. I was travelling at an indicated 57, which was 54 on my GPS phone nav.

(I was bit under the 60 due to the traffic and weather).

On passing the sign the cameras unmistakeably went off, I was in the 2nd lane and a white car who was pretty much at the same speed as me was in the third lane, very slightly ahead, so the flash could have been for either of us BUT he wasn't speeding either.

Question is what is likely to happen next. I know the speed limit switchover times must be recorded but I'm between dash cams - is this gonna be painful?

Anyone had similar, speed limit changing as you drive up but changes before you get there and camera goes off even though you're under the limit? Did a ticket result?

Nothing will happen, I expect.

To your final question, there is one minute grace between speed limit sign illuminating for a lower limit, and the cameras activating.

I’ve had similar on several occasions on a stretch of the A1(M) with a gantry. It’s come to nothing, and I wasn’t speeding either.

When the speed limit signs change, the speed camera system detects that, usually in less than 1 second. It takes a few seconds for the new limit to be recognised.
When the limit is recognised the camera makes an image to record that and at the same time the camera will flash.
Then it waits 1 minute before starting the enforcement at the new limit.
If you go through when the flash occurred for the confirmation of the speed limit change you may think it is for a speeding incident, but it isn’t.

That's interesting thanks

But

The cameras on that section are at the back of the gantry facing down the road. The variable speed limit signs are on the front facing oncoming traffic. So I'm not quite understanding what the cameras are photographing to prove what the limit is?

There is a second set of cameras about 200 m before the gantry.

Steve is talking about different cameras.

I'm a bit out of touch but I don't believe the gray cameras even work, I know they didn't used to.

Ah right - was possibly this gantry looking backward from streetview, so the yellow cameras on the right of the gantry must have flashed:

Correct they dont. Since the Hadecs 3 cameras mounted on the side of the gantry were introduced, the gantry mounted overhead ones were deactivated
