Got a bit of a situation and now getting myself seriously confused with the dates trying to solve this.

Have a car with the expiring dates below: -

Attempting to renew online and the first warning is that the renewal will start on the 01 Feb (i get this). But the second warning is "...if you continue with your application you may be charged again" Why?

Would renewing on 01 March be too late to retain the 01 April renewal date? Or does that bring the renewal date forward to 01 March?

Cheers!

You can't renew from 1 Apr, because the MOT will have expired.

You could SORN and renew the tax a few days later.
Or get a new MOT.

I don’t get it. You want to re-tax in before the tax has run out? What for?

Car is overseas and zero chance of bringing it back before these dates. Got myself in a little pickle...

Oh I see. I’d renew the tax mid March but if it’s overseas… why do you need it taxed?

Only on visitors i.e driving through mainland EU. As i understood it, the insurance is invalidated by there being no tax but not so with the (missing) MOT. Renewing it now online appears to suggest i lose two months but i'm trying not to lose the window to do it whilst i can....

Sorn the car before the end of February, then tax the car from 1st of March ... that way you'll receive a cheque for the one month tax rebate (usually within a week from experience), and as a bonus it will be cheaper to tax the car for the year because tax will rise in April.

Or am I missing something ?

I’ve not yet seen an insurance policy that would be invalidated if the tax ran out!

Just re-read your post - interesting, i assumed it would be for the tax but i need to check the exclusions again to make sure.

No, Oceanrower is right. Tax doesn't affect insurance

Yes you’re missing something, if he Sorns the car now and re taxes it for March then nothing has changed and there will be no refund due, you only get a refund for full months

H'mmm .... if he does it the way I suggested then:

1) he will receive 1 months tax back
2) he will have 25 days left on his MOT so re-taxing the car will be no problem (at this year's tax rate before it goes up in April)

Surely ?

Ok I think I see what you are getting at, the problem is if he sorns it now it's immediate and he then he wont be able to drive until it's re taxed on the 1st March..........And don't call me Shirley

Don't think the system updates in real time, there was a post on here a good while ago where the chap couldn't re tax it for 5 days or so after sorning it

Nope, it works in real time at the end of the month/beginning of the next month.

I guess you get the warning as you're duplicating the tax for a couple of months.

This has come up with EV owners retaxing their cars so they get an extra few months before having to pay VED which starts on 1st April. At first it was said they'd need to sorn their cars, then it was discovered they can just be retaxed by going past the warning.

Having said that, if the car's MOT is going to expire, why bother taxing it? If it's being used abroad it might need to be road legal in its home country so I'd have thought MOT was the bigger issue.

If everyone sorn'd their car on the last day of February and re-taxed it on the 1st March, then the government would lose money due to everyone getting a year's tax at the old rate instead of the new, increased rate which comes in in April.

Struggling to understand the issue here.

At some point in March you should be sent a tax reminder. When this comes, renew the tax for another year. The renewed tax will start on 1 April. Make sure you renew the tax before your MOT expires on 25 March or you won't be able to. Surely that's it?
