Engine broke on Quashkai

Hello, I'd appreciate some helpful advice about what my options are in my present motor situation.
My Nisssan Quaskai broke down and I arranged for it to be towed by RAC on a one-off tow to Nissan, 25 miles from my house, as they have looked after it since I bought it four years ago (19 plate).
Nissan rang me to say it needs a new engine and it's 12 grand.
They've text me and said they're charging me for storage from Wednesday.
The car's worth about 8 grand (50k, 19 plate) and they want 12 to fix it. Bit of a shock to me.
Any helpful advice or suggestions would be appreciated.

Get it moved to a trusted local garage and get them to fix it. Unless you've shot a conrod through the block I doubt the engine needs replacement...

The sensible option is fine a trusted local small garage who will replace the engine for you let them source you a used engine or recon engine.

Where are you located?

Cost to do the engine change will be around £500-£800 at a small garage.

Price to source a used engine via ebay with a 30 day engine warranty will depend what model your one is but around £1000 - £2000

Or get a recon engine from a reputable source someone like Approved engines we have used them for a few engines recently (Ford, Mazda, Peugeot) all been done to a good standard around £2500 per car supplied fitted (depends what engine you have). link below

What reason have Nissan given you why their 50k mile engine needs to be thrown in the bin?

What does your warranty wording say?

Is the engine covered?

Is it a 1.2 and did it oveheat ?

If that's the RAC that extends annually when you get it serviced at Nissan, that breakdown cover only.

If the car has an exclusively Nissan service history, Nissan may offer some good will.

They really should. But given they've given the OP a sky-high quote for replacement and a piss-taking ultimatum re storage fees, which amount to them basically telling the OP to fk off, I reckon it would be an uphill struggle. Plus you'd need an awful lot of goodwill to bring that price down to anything vaguely sensible. Even if the dealer is playing a game whereby they think they can appear super generous by offering 50% goodwill but still trouser £6k, that's the behaviour of a complete shyster and I wouldn't want anything to do with them. Source & fit a replacement engine elsewhere is the only option IMO.

Nissan offer an extended goodwill policy for cars with a full main dealer service history and less than 7 years, 80k miles. I think in dealer terms its classfied as a CC2 claim.

Anyway this extended goodwill will normally pay for the parts and some of the labour, so would expect the bill for a new engine to be nearer 2k. Still a lot but better.

Your dealer isn't interested in the work, or most likely the tech has said it needs a new engine and the service advisor has passed that on verbatim without checking nor seeing what support the manufacturer can provide.

Go back to your dealer and ask them about the extended good will, and if no joy raise a case with Nissan customer services.

I'd be fairly certain you'll see a large part of this cost funded by Nissan,unless it is self inflicted - i.e. you ran it dry of oil, or you didn't service it at a main dealer.

Does your car have a full Nissan service history, does the RAC warranty cover the engine, does it state anything about maintaining the car in-line with the manufacturers schedule, do you have receipts/documentation to support this?

Except nobody in their right mind actually pays 12k for a replacement engine unless it's something exotic.

Nor would you get a brand new battery from a main dealer, but those are the costs that provoke the pearl clutching.

Is the engine a 1.2 petrol? If so there is a known problem with them, I would recommend asking for help on the below forum.

Happened to our Xtrail a few years back, that was the 1.6dci.
Cost us £4000 in the end, found a garage specialising in these engines in Renaults who put a rebuilt bottom end in it.
Part exchanged it a week later.
