New Corvette Z06 available to order in the UK

Well, if you can't get a GT3 allocation...

Good news for Corvette fans in the UK: the Z06 is now available to order through a trio of dealerships here, with right-hand drive, from £180k. In fact that counts as good news for anyone who loves great cars, really; the PH review of the 670hp, 5.5-litre Z06 (the most powerful nat-asp engine on sale today) praised the grip, sound and performance. And it’s a mid-engined V8 that revs beyond 8,000rpm. Imagine turning up to a track day of Porsches, McLarens and AMGs in this.

For the moment, there aren’t many details, but there is enough to be encouraged by. A press release from PSM&W Communications in Germany states that ‘the legendary Corvette Z06 is officially available in the UK, bringing its track-inspired performance to Britain.’ The chosen dealerships are Lumen Automotive in Shrewsbury plus Arnold Clark’s outlets in Glasgow and Altrincham. Decent coverage for just three sites, though suffice it to say those who want a RHD Z06 might have to put some effort in.

Lumen’s website suggests the price is from £179,791, though nothing further is available from them beyond an ‘Enquire Now’ form. Certainly that money would pitch the Corvette against cars like the AMG GT R Pro (launched just yesterday at £176,605) and new 911 GT3, which is £157,300 - although the Weissach package is another £20k. So the same sort of ballpark. While the press release mentions the same 8,600rpm redline as the USDM car, it suggests that UK Z06s will have 637bhp, or 645hp metric, or a little way off the 670hp it launched with. Which is almost certainly to do with emissions. Still plenty to be working with.

Other than that, little else has been shared; we don’t know if cars will come pre-specced, or if options will be available. There’s no word on when any right-hand drive cars might arrive, either, which of course has been a bugbear from the very beginning of the C8’s life. But all signs point to the Z06 coming here at some point in the not-too-distant future, and that sounds like great news. ‘Stay tuned – more exciting news is just around the bend’, concludes the press release. You just try and stop us.

I bet in US is considerably cheaper.
Even a standard C8 is double the price in Europe. Can anyone tell why?
If I'll ever consider a C8 it will be a US import. Plenty of companies doing that. I'm not going to fatten the distributors on my money.

The prices quoted in the US are without tax, which vary between states and will have to be added on to whatever price you can negotiate with your dealer. If the Z06 is in high demand, they can also charge you more than MSRP, there aren’t consumer protections like in the UK (which admittedly have workarounds).

In the UK, they quote ‘on the road’ prices including tax. There could also be spec differences, with stuff coming standard on UK cars that are cost options in the USA, because Chevrolet want to pitch the Z06 at a different point in the market.

You have to wait for detailed spec sheets for your countries version and compare like for like. Pricers are usually a lot closer than headline figures might suggest.

If I’ve got this right the base C8 US price is $70k say £55k at current rates. A Z06 is 112k US so 88k Sterling. Someone is taking the piss…

Could this be exactly what Trump is talking about, tariffs and Europe being, “extremely bad to us” ?

Thanks for the explanation. Tax is a factor but it's usually 3-5%. Even 10% would be far from doubling the price.

The same doubled price was in case of BMW M3 F80 which cost half price in US when I checked at that time.
I think the US market is more disputed so producers give up margins. But they compensate by selling "rich" gullible Europeans for double price.

I'd actually rather buy a Chinese car at the moment anyway.

True.
Even so I was checking Ford Bronco and Mustang prices, they are much closer to the US ones. How does Ford manages to do so? I think it's maybe that GM goes through an exclusive Europe importer that uses his position to gouge prices.

I wonder if you could order a RHD from a friendly dealer in the US and then import yourself.

You are forgetting the other side. In the UK, if you can get a configurator with a price breakdown, you will see the pre tax price, which is more comparable with the American sticker price. BMW used to do this price breakdown on their older configurator. The price of an £85k BMW M3 with all the taxes taken off was about £55k. I think the taxes are a lot worse in other EU countries like France.

And by tax, I don’t just mean VAT. There are all manner of charges that make up the UK’s ‘on the road price’, which are basically amount to a tax.

Also, there is no such thing as an American ‘on the road price’, that applies across the whole country. You have to do it state by state, like you’d have to examine country by country in the EU.

I did the price comparison with a EU country where I live and tax was included (VAT 19%, and registration 300 eur) still the price was double fof that M3/M4 in US. There as I said taxes are 3-5% in most states.

Yes in some European countries there are eco taxes(FR, NL ), as in France where for those the price even doubles for a Civic Type R for example. But I was not referring to those.

How much are the shipping costs / taxes / homologation costs for an import where you are?

I am in Luxembourg. Tax is 10% + 17% VAT and 2-300 eur the registration. Shipping 2-3k Plus a few thousands for the homologation. Same is in most EU countries.
Ok let's say you pay 50% on top but still is not the 100% price difference.

I think you may have to look past the brand and judge it as a car in it's own right.

The engine is a masterpiece.

You can see on the RHD Z06’s already at Arnold Clark that they have the normal quad exit exhaust at the sides of the diffuser like the normal C8 instead of the quad centre exit that LHD cars get. Looks like a different exhaust system accounts for that difference in power.

The price - makes sense when a Skoda Kodiak costs £52k and a BMW M5/Audi RS6 is £120k+

When the lower end car prices increase, the higher end stuff does too.

Love the brand, but 180 is punchy and will be a hard sell.

Only by Europeans. Still blue collar stateside. £88k plus tax (usually under 10%) means your AMG GT R Pro/GT3 competitor comes in under £100k.

Or less than the price of a 4-pot AMG GT or zero-spec base 911.
