New to the forum and new to owning a audi s1 and was so surprised to see the general opinions on the s1 be quite negatives I no it looks like a shoe but when you actually look at it's performance compared to way above it the audi s1 comes out on top both the focus st mk2 and mk3 come short in performance same for both the mk6 mk7 and mk8 GTI all come short in 0.60 if that's anything to go by its really hard to actually compare the car because on paper its rivals to fiesta st and polo gti but clearly it's performance isn't comparable at all not even to the flag ships I just mentioned of course the mk7 golf r and the audi s3 and cupra300 would be real competition and smoke the little s1 but even when you remap them the tunability is crazy for the power to weight it's crazy how much hate the little s1 gets. I personally have had a really good experience so far and the way the turbo kicks is ridiculous for such small car.

Anything Ive read about them has been quite positive from owners anyway, too small for some but no doubt they are quick little cars.
If you enjoy it dont worry too much what others think.

I think the book value destroyed them so people couldn't really give them the respect the performance deserves because it put it in much higher category but then the performance kind of got brushed under the carpet because of obviously the size and prize the interior didn't help I do feel it is quite outdated for a 17 reg car but when you look on paper its faster then alot of cars above its class

I've personally always liked them, and I knew someone who had one and they had nothing but praise for it. I think the reviews of it in the car mags were decent at the time as well. I'd happily buy one for sure.

Yeah I think evo and others did give it good praise I think the interior and price really hindered it lack of anything modern but for me I got it just for performance and the odd school run I could see why the size could be a problem for others.

I've said many times how great these are.

I did 48,000 mainly urban and extra urban miles in one. Often, indeed mostly under pressure and with no time to waste.

It was switched out for a GR Yaris.

I miss the Audi S1.

I had numerous journeys that I repeated.

One particular measure that I could never quite get my head around (and this is where I was 'on it';

Exiting the turn the Audi S1 would be circa 40-45mph. At the end of the slip road the Audi would be circa 110mph. The GR Yaris was darn near exactly the same. This rang true across my experiences with both.

The Yaris had more grip and that would show up on a track so suspect with the space on Track you'd see higher apex speeds. On the road however, things are different. The Yaris seemed to have less torque. I don't care what the tech specs say. In the real world the Audi S1 just had more push. Not much, but noticeable.

I bought both cars brand new from main dealers.

In the real world the Audi was more fun. Less grip and slideable. The Yaris was not slidey on the road, in the dry. It wasn't really possible in daily, and safe use to provoke it.

It's important to note however I'm talking 'safe' use. Maintaining my bubble, and not intruding on other road users.

On country lanes again, tonnes of grip, especially at the front end from Yaris. The Audi however just flowed. It drifted over the bumps in a way the yaris couldn't. Was the Yaris more planted - yes, did it flow as nicely, no. Was the Audi more fun, yes, but also easier. Would the Yaris have got down 1 mile of B road quicker? Yes, by a few seconds no doubt.

Given the choice of which to take for an all-out 'gotta get there mega quick, enjoying every moment' run from Aston Cantlow down through the Cotswolds using lanes and B roads........Give me the Audi keys please.

Thanks for the write up dude cool to hear good insight from someone who has had both that journey sounds like you must have a absolute tear up no matter what car your in ???? i could imagine the gr yaris was way more focused and planted i always wondered what they would feel like to drive i wish their was more content around both cars all around i think both these weapons offer something other hatches can't compete with im sure their the two smallest cars in the world to get 4x drive. ??.

I’ve got one and it’s stuck around, I’ve had loads of hot hatches over the years but the s1 has been certainly one of the better ones. For the category it’s in it really works - as long as you can deal with the lack of space / practicality.

Yeah,

You're not doing a big Tesco's shop in it!

I’ve been debating swapping for a b48 flavour mini clubman jcw or m135i but considering they have 306 bhp I couldn’t face letting go of the s1 which I didn’t expect, such a good blend for my needs. Performance just feels right and adequate.

One reason why I bought ours haha.

Bought a 2017 Competition sportsback a year ago, 100% stock. Great fun on the twisty bits.
Ive got a 1996 calibra 4x4 turbo with @280bhp and I'd say the S1 pulls harder. Power to weight is obviously higher.

S1 my joint favourite modern Audi, and I won't hear a bad word said about them.

I'm surrounded by S/RS cars and and S1 (when I can get them) is the car I'll take to go and play with. The market agress with this too; genuinely nice, cherished cars make good money and sell easily. I've seen two out to delighted new owners today.

Yeah the is20 kicks hard I'm.sure it's got 20psi wear the is38 only has 17. Either way it still catches me of gaurd how hard 2nd to 3rd kicks and with zero traction loss so it's not like irs a sensation of wheels pin but puree turbo kick going to the wheels
